There is definitely a variable in the game somewhere that turns off plates for distant mobs. Where it is, and how to say, I can't say.

Aloft came after Nameplates Config actually, but doesn't really matter.
Nameplates are handled in C code meaning we can't modiy the distance they show up at, Blizzard would have to provide something in order for it to be done and so far all we've been given is the ability to toggle whats shown.
