This may have actually changed, as bigwigs and a few other addons are now using proximity meters on certain fights (curator, gruul, etc.) and I remember seeing a lib in wowace boasting about providing coords inside of instances, though I can't think of any mod off the top of my head that is stand alone that will do what you're looking for.

No, thats not correct.
BigWigs uses the range of a spell or item to see if players are within a certain range. Bigwigs (or any mod) cannot tell how far people are away, it can just tell if people are within a certain spell/item range.
For instance, gruul range check is done using bandages, because it has a range of 8 yards, while Curator is done using the distance for duels (10 yards).
