That would make it fantastic for AoE farming, obviously, but what about for actual tanking purposes?

I'd have to say that the
[Darkmoon Card: Vengeance] might be better for AOE tanking.
For one thing, Timbal's Crystal has an internal cooldown, so it's not like you're going to shoot 10 Shadow Bolts everywhere from Consecrating three dozen Demon-Hunter Supplicants. This is opposed to DMC: V, which has no cooldown (and can even proc from ranged attacks/spells), although I'm not familiar with how much a tank's pure avoidance would curb the proc rate.
For another, the Shadow Bolt deals (obviously) Shadow damage, which isn't affected by Righteous Fury, which curbs the threat potential. This is opposed to DMC: V's Holy damage proc.
Yes, the raw spell damage makes it a good threat trinket, but I don't consider the proc to make it stand out particularly over other spell damage trinkets you might be wearing. I'd argue the
[Battlemaster's Audacity] is better for a raiding AOE tank situation.
All that being said, only a handful of items have more spell damage than the Crystal (Eye of Magtheridon, Hex Shrunken Head), and those I wouldn't take over other casters in the guild, so I'd still hang onto the Crystal.
