Basically I'm just looking for "opening moves" to avoid stun lock. Do I need to rely on my partner more or can I avoid the lock solely through trinkets/thorns etc...?

Barkskin if you get locked. If you expect to get hit start Abolish and a Rejuv on yourself. Trinket the kidney shot. Use Nature's Grasp + Feral Charge to get space. Additionally your teammate can help peel the rogue off and you can LOS the pending shadow step.
