With regards to the first: this is what zone filters are for. Upgrading from Vindicator's Brand to Blade of Infamy is totally possible if you're doing Hyjal; and if you're not doing Hyjal, why do you have it selected? So I'm disinclined to worry too much about that - I think the existing framework handles it adequately. And I think a lot of people do want to know what the best items available to them are at any given time.
With regards to the second... it's a possibility. The catch being that I think that might cause confusion, when you equip an item that's listed as a 5.73 DPS upgrade and your DPS changes by an amount other than 5.73 DPS. This is of course an issue to some extent anyway (for instance, equipping a listed upgrade and having your DPS go down) but I think the level of abstraction is helpful in reducing the confusion. I also admit that I don't particularly see the value in listing the answer in DPS, which is, for purposes of comparing gear, actually a less intuitive unit to use.
So, in brief: thanks for the suggestions, but at the moment I'm somewhat disinclined to do either of these. If I get overwhelming feedback to the contrary, I will of course reconsider; but the value of these propositions seems limited enough so as not to be worth the effort and confusion that may result.
