Honestly... that might really be it. Might be thinking that the spell penetration helps the fire damage from the weapon land, and might be thinking if he spends enough time meleeing for DPS, the spi might kick in and regen mana.

My warlock alt has AP on bracers, spirit on chest and other various oddities - I'm leveling enchanting, and fuck standing around in a city yelling out free enchants, or buying greens at 10g a pop to level on. Surprisingly, it hasn't gotten me any snide comments yet even though I do a surprising amount of pugs.
