Do not forget that 2.0 was thrown out to the players as a bone, because they were a bit late, and the Christmas holidays bit them in the (censored), pushing the release further.
I've seen plenty of posts giving the timeline of WotLK release, and they all seem to forget that little bit. The 2.0 release was not something "according to plan", originally. They could very well release 3.0 on the eve of the expansion launch.
