On Crit vs. Int for Mana Regen

Disclaimer: I'm a die-hard holy priest. I've been healing in WoW on the same toon from MC to three drake Sartharion. What I love most about WoW is the math behind the mechanics of healing. As such, most of my posts will be about the math behind the holy priest and if you're not a holy priest or into the math you probably won't enjoy those posts. I will also be developing a spreadsheet based upon my postings, so some of posts will be short updates about its progress, along with links to the updated versions. From time to time I'll probably post about my work as an environmental staff scientist for a consulting firm in California. Hopefully, this will be fairly interesting to another subset of people. Anyhow, if you've decided to keep reading, enjoy!

I've been asked by a priest on my server to outline my gearing decisions, so my first few posts will be motivated by this goal. While some of these posts might, and probably will, go over the same content as the Holy Priest Theorycrafting thread, I hope the blog will at least present the material in a different, more conversational way, and possibly bring to light some new ways to look at holy priest gearing.

Some basics about priest stats:
Spell Power: Adds to throughput by making heals heal for more, increased coefficients through talents.
Spell Haste Rating (haste): Reduces cast time, increases HPS by x% while increasing mana used per second
Spell Critical Strike rating (crit): Increases chance to crit which increases the amount healed 50% and procs mana saving and throughput increasing talents.
Intellect (Int): Increases regen through passive regen (with spirit) and max-mana based effects (like Replenishment)
Spirit: Increases passive regen and increases spell power slightly through certain talents.

Passive Regen Formula: 5*(0.001+sqrt(int)*spirit*0.005575)

Now the basics behind int and crit rating:
45.91 - Spell Crit rating needed for 1% crit
166.66 - Int needed for 1% crit
but with int you also get 15 mana and increased passive regen

How much is int worth versus crit? I sit around 1200 spirit and 1300 int while raid buffed. That means that one additional int will increase my passive regen by 0.7 mp5 oo53r and 0.2 mp5 i5sr with approximately 80% of your time i5sr you get a benefit ~0.3 mp5 from passive regen, but wait there's more. (This will change slightly with 3.0 but the details haven't been released so I think that ~0.3 mp5 is a fair assumption.)

Replenishment will give you 0.25% of any mana gains from int in mps or 1.25% of mana gains in mp5. So 1 int is also worth 0.1875 mp5 from Replenishment. Shadowfiend gives you the equivalent of 1% mana every 5s. That's another 0.15 mp5. Mana tide per resto shaman in your group adds 0.4% mana every 5s which is 0.06 mp5. That means that overall int is worth ~0.6 mp5+1 crit%/167 whereas 1 crit rating is worth 1 crit%/46. But you have to take into account int scaling with Blessing of Kings which brings in a scaling factor of 1.1 to the value for intellect.. This brings the value for int up to ~0.66 mp5 and 0.0066% crit where as a crit rating is worth 0.0217% crit. Subtracting through by 0.0066% crit and normalizing with respect to crit% gives us 43.7 mp5 per crit%.

Talents bring your chance to proc clearcasting on crit to 60%. Assuming you always use your free heal for a Greater Heal and otherwise you're Flash Healing that comes to an ~0.03 procs per 5s for a heal worth (ideally 1050 mana, but if you have 4 piece on that goes to 940 mana and if you get Serendipity that goes down to ~680) so assuming a 30% proc on Serendipity (stingy for that talent usually more like 65% plus when spam healing). You're looking at a real mana savings of around 25 mp5 from a crit%.

So for every crit% you gain instead of using that item budget for int you lose 19 mp5. However, crit does benefit throughput. How much does crit affect throughput and is it worth losing that 19 mp5? I'll discuss that in my next itemization post "On Haste vs. Crit for Throughput."
