Question #1: Gnome Hunters
Posted 07/20/09 at 6:08 PM by VerziehenOne
DISCLAIMER: I'm well aware this is a video game by which Retcon and 'it didn't fit' or 'not enough resources/time/[reason]' is commonplace.
The subject of this particular Question of Logic™ is this: Why are there no Gnome Hunters?
Consider This:
Expanding on said considerations:
Dwarf Rogues
------
Let's look at what a Dwarf is, by race and lore. This is a creature, a humanoid known widely as a loud drunken bunch of earth moving and shaping ruffians, unaffected by deep earth heat or high mountain cold. This is a short stocky race known for it's ability to resist a hit that would fell a normal person, as well as the noise with which they handle most encounters. (Battle cries to Dwarven gods, intimidation and blood pumping war screams). This is a race known for it's dancing (when druink), bull headed resolve for a goal's completion, and impatience when an avenue for resolution is available.
Those are all unique wonderful qualities of a lore-rich and fascinating creature, regardless of how it came to be. (Native denizen, Curse of Flesh offspring of Earthen, or [Other™]). The fact is, none of those qualities are in line with what a Rogue is by nature, training, and necessity.
A Rogue is first and foremost, just that,... a rogue. They are, by design, solace loving, seperate and largely mysterious throughout their inception. They prefer to deal with situations alone and without outside variables(read: Others), handling morally ambiguous situations without arguing over the decision, and ultimately, surviving by whatever means necessary. They are elegant, accurate, vicious, and silent. Living in the shadows and being seen as an anomaly is not merely for convenience, but because of what makes a Rogue a rogue.
Put the two together, and I do not imagine a stocky Dwarf nimbly tip-toeing throughout the background, using small sharp weapons and generally subverting the nature (of Dwarves) of being loud and communal with that (of rogues) of being essentially Warcraft's 'loner' that exists in silence and shadows.
Too Long Didn't Read version: Every time I see a Dwarf Rogue, I think about Carrot Top as a Comedian. Sure, it's possible that it may work, and that sometimes rresults will not follow expectation ... but are you really going to take that gamble?
Undead Priests
------
An Undead (Forsaken) character is an abomination of nature, from it's very 'rebirth'. Everything that is an Undead/Forsaken is abhorrant to the ground on which it resides, being in essence the antithesis of what Nature is the embodiment of: the cycle of Life, which ultimately ends in permanent death. In worlds beyond Warcraft, an Undead creation is the embodiment of darkness, usually having little to no memories of what made it more than merely an animated body, and usually is subservant to another. The majority of lore on Undead, in Warcraft and other sources, indicates that they are bent on revenge for their death, vicious to the point of madness(with nothing to lose), and with most Undead, a malignant tumor that only seems to grow as it kills(creating further Undeath).
A Priest is the embodiment of worship of the Light. Setting aside religion, a Priest in video games harbors a true understanding of what it means to oppose Darkness™, Evil™, and the Un-natural™. The Priest dedicates their life to serving the greater good, providing healing and purification of body and spirit, and sacrifice for the defenseless or weakened. All in all, a Priest is a set of (usually) very rigid principles on which the power of Light is granted, but only if followed with fervor and tenacity.
Both provide rich and colorful options for players to explore ways to interact with and change the World (of Warcraft). But, combining the two results in a contradiction even in the very name of the result. The embodiment of death and decay, serving the thing which (in Lore™) seeks to destroy and eradicate it? A bit far-fetched.
Too Long Didn't Read version: When I sit and ponder about an Undead Priest, I am quickly reminded of Dairy Queen's Burger menu. Sure, it may be an interesting idea,.. but if you're looking for a Burger, should you be going to a place that specializes in Ice Cream?
Wrapping it up ...
Blizzard ... if we have to accept the ridiculous notion of a Dwarf Rogue ... and the absurd combination that is an Undead Priest,... is it so far fetched that we have a Gnome Hunter? I for one, welcome the idea of a Gnome with Nuts, his faithful Squirrel with an insatiable blood lust for battle ...

Hello Devs and other Blues. this is my first post but I really hope that you will take this idea into consideration because a fix is urgently needed for the issue I am about to high light.
Yesterday my hunter dinged 80 for the first time! I was so happy as I really wanted to see the Necropolis Naxxramas with my casual raid guild. They told me to go to Dragonblight and fly to where Naxxramas was. Seemed like a small place but I was quite excited as I only had one hour available to raid that night (family stuff hehe). Once I found the entrance (which took a while and several spins around the Necropolis) I was stunned to see there were FOUR wings in the instance!! "They must be very short" I thought to myself and also said in /g guild chat!! "Not really" someone replied! After an hour our guild had only killed two bosses, Anub Rekhan and also Grand Widow Faerlina. My guild mates told me that there were FIFTEEN more bosses in the instance after that, including two in an "extra wing" called Frost Wyrm's Lair! Blizzard, this is RIDICULOUS. Not even one of these extremely large wings could POSSIBLY fit inside of that Necropolis Naxxramas that you see floating in Dragonblight. In fact it takes longer to walk from Anub Rekhan's room to Grand Widow Faerlina's room than it does to walk all around the Necropolis itself outside!!! YES I know that Kel Thuzad is a powerful lich wizard, but that doesn't mean he can just ignore the laws of space and time! Please make the Naxxramas instance smaller to increase the realism and make it possible to defeat the entire instance on a limited casual play schedule such as my own. Worst case scenario please triple the size of the Necropolis outside so players are not miss led into thinking that it is a short reasonable length instance!! |

Gnome Hunters cannot exist because the pet would eat the Gnome.
P.S. Dairy Queen Burgers are decent. |

Addressing the topic of Dwarf Rogues:
It's well documented that while the "norm" mentality of a race or culture or regional group of people tends to be well represented (hence the term normal), there can and usually are individuals who fall outside that norm. While most dwarves are loud drunkards with Scottish/Irish accents (pardon my lack of knowledge about which is which), it seems reasonable to assume that there can be dwarven loners who prefer the rogue lifestyle. I'd be curious to see the percent of the dwarf population that are rogues, since I think it's small. Addressing the topic of Forsaken priests: It seems in your assessment that you are applying the strictures of the Paladin code of ethics and morality to the priest class. Paladins have a unique understanding of the Light and dedicate themselves to serving the Light as best they see fit. This includes a strict code of ethics by which they hold themselves. This also falls in line with Paladins in other settings of the Fantasy genre, where they are upstanding knights who have ridiculous codes of honor. Priests by contrast are people who have knowledge of the Light, but serve the people. It's more akin to a mage that draws their power from the Light rather than the Arcane. They don't necessarily have any kind of bond to the Light. They use their knowledge of the Light, and by association of the Dark, as they see fit for the benefit of whomever they are loyal to. Hence the presence of Shadow Priests, who use their knowledge of the Light/Dark to harm their enemies in service of their country/race/faction/guild. The Forsaken are just another faction, and their priests are using their talents to service their people and their goals. Addressing Gnome hunters: From my understanding, gnomes first appeared in Warcraft lore in WoW. Since they had no historical lore tying them to particular classes at that point, Bliz had to create that association. Looking at the gnomes in WoW, they are not outdoorsy explorers. They are not hearty and durable. They are not particularly attuned to nature. They are small, and unlike the dwarves, they are not stocky. They win conflicts by having superior technology rather than superior fighting force. All of this suggests they would not be hunters. |

Sometimes I run around Crystalsong Forest and ask why there are blue dragons overhead. Why can I not mount them and fly them into Wintergrasp?

Haha this reminds me of the general wow forums post in which the OP was complaining about his talents being reset every few patches, how he had put a lot of time into choosing them and it was a lot of work re-talenting..

Wow! Just the other day, I had 0 comments, and now an explosion! That's exciting.
Yeah, I know the validity of the 2nd of my two points of reference (Undead Priests) was tenuous at best, but I was trying to not be one-sided with my argument. Another valid point would be that I didn't point out a Horde counterpart that doesn't contain a race with a class that I wanted. However, that makes my wishful thinking no less fun. Vykromond, you made me laugh pretty hard. The rest of you need to work harder, you got a smile, a smirk even, at best. And lastly, thanks for the welcome! I'm a long time reader (going through the Wrath Lore topic right now ... page 117 and counting), and figured i'd join the community! I hope to contribute more than just questions of (admittedly questionable) logic. |

I thought this was going to be about LARPing a gnome hunt; kind of like Ghostbusters but with more crotch punching and possible child porn boobage.

Someone up there said Gnomes first appeared in WoW. This is utterly incorrect. They featured very prominently as Alliance units in WarCraft II, such as the Gnomish Flying Machine and Gnomish Submarine.

Just FYI, I know she won't want to see me posting this here, but Binkenstein made it pretty clear that she is interested in you. Whatever the female version of white knighting is - you've got at least one fan.

Esoth is also known to be a) wrong b) wronger c) a total lier, and d) fails to understand the difference between "Male" and "Female"

Robespierre, you get a +1 Internet for your comment.
I was kind of excited to learn I had a fan! And then to learn that it was a Female! (Until the next post ... when I learned it was actually a Male .. and apparently not a fan ... ) ![]() |

Don't be worried. Binky (she liked to be called that by her heroes) is just shy and trying to deflect attention.
I'd suggest PM'ing her with photos to show affection. She's spurned me in the past, but I can see your grasp of WoW is better than mine, and will have a much better chance. PS: I'm serious |
|
|
|
Binky is actually a very big fan of yours. When you are done with the lore thread I highly recommend starting from the first post of "Ranting about Stupid People" and read that entire thread. It is a bit long, but there are some good laughs and you will really learn a lot about everyone posting here in doing so!

I take offense to your mention that DQ does not have a proper burger/meal menu. The burgers are infact quite good, and the chicken strip basket is "5bux" of heaven.

They should bring back dwarf mages, but only let them spec frost.
|
|
|
|
You know, Mex, that's an interesting point considering the Frostborn Dwarves and all. Maybe it's a launch point for a new class or something? Maybe something along the lines of the much-discussed sub-tree speccing thing? Maybe a Priest / Mage combo kinda thing or something ... very interesting.
