Configuring SCT

Posted 05/05/08 at 10:48 PM by Yes
Scrolling Combat Text is an amazing mod. It's a lot better then the default WoW combat text. In this article I will teach you how to configure SCT to be less spammy and still provide a lot of info.

This is how the default setting of SCT looks with just one rogue on you.

As we can see, all the new effects going on you are displayed, so are all the heal spells, along with icons and all their names. Icons are horrible, the default version is really spammy.

The first thing we will want to do is go to the SCT Spells tab and disable some things. This is how mine looks:

You really want to disable all power gains as it's really spammy. You want to see overhealing as a healer.
The other things you want to disable are: Spell Icons (Soo much cleaner!) Spell Damage Types, disable spell colours (So all spells are one colour) and disable Spell/Skill names.

Right away things will be much less spammy but still show the same amount of info.

The next thing you want to do is set up your SCT frames. This is how I have mine setup:

I have SCT Frame 2 display as HuD Curved, alternating. I stick all the heals in there. SCT Frame 1 shows all incoming damage and debuffs, SCT messages shows all buffs.

Now you need to assign what you want to see where. To do that go to SCT Events.

This is how I have mine setup:

Lastly, go to the SCT Animation Tab and disable *Flag Combat Text*

Your SCT setup should now be much less spammy and not take the whole middle space of your UI.

I was playing around with my UI on Sunday and one of my goals was to get SCT up and running, but after about 45 minutes of messing around I gave up.

Even after using your configuration options I found it incredibly spammy, though I was able to lessen that somewhat by filtering out low amounts of damage in an options menu somewhere.

The only real advantage I saw was that it had a custom pop-up for mace stuns in the center of my screen that the default WoW text doesn't have. I would have liked to keep that, but configuring the rest of the addon was taking entirely too long. There's no real "test" function, so I was wandering around in the options somewhat blind and had to attack someone in PVP just to see if I'd changed something the way I'd wanted to.

I suppose if I knew what I was doing I could configure this add in a useful way, but it doesn't seem worth the aggravation for what's only a tiny benefit at the moment.

What is it that you find specifically spammy about SCT?

I installed the mod, went through the settings you suggested (though maybe I missed some), and hopped into a couple of different battlegrounds to try the mod out. The spam from "frame 1" was so fast and furious that I could barely see my character, and had no idea what was going on around me.

There must be one frame on which all incoming damage is going. The idea of having damage on top of your character is that it alerts you that something is wrong and you're not watching your character but instead paying attention on how to deal with the incoming damage. Heals should be on a different frame.

If you really think that you don't want damage on top of your character you can move the frame to the left/right.
