Behind the scenes of Exploiting the Arena System

A few weeks ago blizzard decided to stop point buying and win trading by implementing queuing based on personal rating. This lead to a halt of players team switching and playing multiple teams at the high level arena. My team has been sitting at 2450~ 2v2 rating for a few weeks now However, my partner figured out a way around the system to level our team rating easily.
What do you get if you take a top 5 team and queue at 1500 rating? 2000 rating? You get a sure win. What happens at 1850 rating? Teams start giving you 1 point. We tested this yesterday – by leaving the team and grinding the personal rating of the person that left to 2200 we were queued against really easy teams that gave us 1-2 points each. This week we went 48-1 (One horrible loss attempting to 1v2 a 2dps team…). Highlights of the day include playing about 30 or so games worth 0 points, playing against 2000 rated double rogue and spriest rogue teams worth 2~ points, etc.

Still, the result is positive. We’re not even up to 2300 personal and our team rating has gone up even including the silly loss. Inc exploiting and people leaving their teams to get the team higher PR. Stuck at 1800? Have your partner leave the team and play 5 point games to easily level your PR.

That's sort of a tragedy of the commons though...the more people that do that, the more good teams you find down there. The risk of losing 30 points repeatedly is too high.
Although it definitely works for 1850, at least. |

That's true, but for a while at least you might see some ridiculous team rating inflation that might end up carrying some people to gladiator.
Also, the change to eliminate team selling has really only opening this second market (PR selling), for which the demand might be even higher once the S4 PR requirements are live. |

I ran into this in my scrub 1550 2s last night. An 1800 team beat us for 5 points. Armory showed a 1650 player and a 1775 player had teamed up, one of them having quit their team and joined the other's.
I don't know if Armory is up to date now but it appears that they didn't meet the 1850 goal, they're at 1822 with both their personal ratings in the 1600s going 9 and 1. Hmm, maybe they just seemed to be exploiting this. We also picked up 27 points from a 1750 team with two bad players (loose CCs, low burst, etc definitely not 1600+ quality gameplay). I couldn't figure out if this was another attempt at gaming the system or something else going on. People are definitely going to use this to inflate one teammate's ratings to qualify for gear or titles though. Balloon one player, get the gear, balloon the other. Or yeah, just sell the system, of course there's a huge demand for it. |

I wonder if Blizzard will declare this practice an exploit and retroactively ban people who did it?

Most players won't be able to play 48-1 or whatever, so this strategy works for getting 1850 and for the top top teams who know they're not going to lose.

i hate peeps like this guy all it does is make teams with lower ratings get their ass kicked over and over again instead of trying to do it the fair way and fight some one your own size you play the chicken shit way

I don't know if you're aware of this, but even though the team rating only gained 1 point, the personal rating of the lower-level guy was increasing as though you beat a proper level team.

Yes Zellyn, but the point is that personal rating can be reset to 1500 whenever you want, meaning you can always get a supply for easy-to-beat teams, which you can then slowly grinding rating off of with no real risk of losing. Whenever the leaver's PR gets high enough, they just leave again and rejoin, back at 1500, and you start over, but with a higher team rating.
