The Importance of Being Earnest.

Posted 02/19/09 at 2:15 PM by Adoriele
I recently received the following PM from someone asking for help. Let me stress that the way that this was worded is what made me decide to take the case. He's comparing himself to another Moonkin. He provides enough data points to prove that he knows at least partially what to look for, but is still at a loss as to why he's doing less damage than a person he believes he should be better than:

I recently had an experience in 25-man Naxx that has left me confused. Here is a link to the WWS:

WWS Loading...

A moonkin from another guild joined the raid late. So naturally I compared my DPS to theirs. I am confused about the 3 attempts we did on Thaddius. Can you take a look at my stats (Brenhew) compared to the other moonkin in the group (Moonkinsauce)? I am consistently lower than them even though:

1) They are not hit capped, even with IFF.
2) I had about 100 more spell power (unbuffed).
3) Thier talent spec did not include any points in IIS. But it did include 2 points in CF.

I've been analyzing the stats and it looks like they were just spamming wrath.

My typical rotation is:
1) IFF -> IS -> MF (I will recast as they expire)
2) Wrath until eclipse procs
3) Starfire until eclipse cooldown is up.
4) Rinse and repeat.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Thanks.

So, with what looks like a decent gear disparity and a better rotation, why is he doing less? First, here's a shot of the WWS report, in case it expires:

Yup, 600DPS difference, definitely worth looking into. A check of the WWS shows that Moonkinsauce, as noted, was pretty much just spamming Wrath, ignoring Eclipse procs (well, not entirely. Of the 10 Eclipse procs, 4 were caused by a Starfire, suggesting he was at least aware of the idea of having to switch spells). Here's the fight put into WWScalcs:

77% casting is worthy of attention, being significantly below normal, but it's Thaddius. WWS doesn't tell us when someone's charge is changed, so it's hard to tell just how much movement was necessary. More worrisome is the uptime of IS and MF, both well under 50%. In all, this parse shows a pretty poor performance. So why is he doing so much better when Brenhew has better gear?

Here's Brenhew's entry to WWSCalcs:

http://elitistjerks.com/blog_attachm...1&d=1235070737

More DoT Ticks, more SF casts (which matches with his stated rotation), no misses, higher apparent crit percentage. In all, it looks like Bren is doing much better in the doing-it-right category. But then we look at Percent Casting. 53% (actually, when we account for the FFs put up, assuming they're all Brenhew's, it rises to 56%). And that's all we need to know. Brenhew seems to know more about Moonkin DPS, is paying more attention to what he's doing, has higher DoT uptime, but all that doesn't matter if you're not casting spells.

Now, again, this is Thaddius we're talking about. It's very possible (though relatively unlikely) that Brenhew was forced to switch sides on every charge, while Moonkinsauce was allowed to stay put. And if that's the case, then it's hardly Brenhew's fault, and would definitely explain the lower performance.

So if you find yourself wondering why you're so much lower on the meters than another Moonkin (whether they're in your guild, or you're looking at a parse from someone else's run), you're not done analyzing things until you've looked at how much time you spent casting. Because, as you can see, it can be the most important issue.

What do you suggest for ways to improve total casting time? I'm trying to get through a similar issue where I'm sitting around 78% casting time and Hamlet is at 92%. This results in him getting off around a dozen more starfires in a three minute fight. I'm certainly not standing around watching, but I'm apparently clipping spells and then suffering a delay from the time it takes me to notice that the next spell isn't casting and then actually get it started.

Personally, I'm taking the pseudo-G15/AHK approach. I don't actually use any keystroke emulation software, but I sure as hell mash the keys repeatedly as soon as I'm close to where Quartz tells me I need to start casting. Which is another thing, you may not need cast sequence macros anymore, but Quartz is still awesome at letting you know when your input will start mattering again. Ping is of marginal importance, coming into play only when dealing with DoTs or Wrath.

For Wrath spam, my finger is never off the key unless I'm refreshing a DoT. I may take longer recognizing that Eclipse has procced, but a non-Eclipse Wrath is better than nothing.
