Raiding AH with a new toon

Posted 05/11/09 at 11:43 AM by Derrek
My seven year old son and I have started yet another pair of toons to become mighty and powerful. I'm playing a druid this go, and my son a Hunter. We are playing alliance, and of course… night elves. This is the fifth or sixth set of characters that we've made (all but one are alliance, because my young son wants to be a hero!). So, why is a post like this on my AH raiding blog? I've decided to start casually raiding the AH on my lvl 14 alliance druid. The server is a new one (Borean Tundra), and at the pace of our leveling, I don't expect our characters to be in Outland before Christmas. My goal is to raise around 1,000g to twink our characters quite a bit during the leveling process.

Day 1- My character is lvl 9 with around 20s. Questing with my son for an hour, we hit lvl 13 and I have around 30s, but not enough money to purchase all my lvl12 skills. (Sound familiar?)

-My chosen professions are Herbalism and Inscription, while my son's hunter is a leatherworker / skinner. I am not going to use my son's character at all. This will be purely my druid.
-I am not going to lvl my toon past my son. We are questing together and 'ding' within 3m of each other. The xp difference is from druid/hunter specifc quests.
-Being a 'new' server, prices are cheaper but gold is generally harder to come by so inflation hasn't kicked in yet. My established server having 10g/stack of briarthorn is a bargin. 7g/stack of briar thorn on BT is expensive.

Step 1: Level my Inscription. I herbed like a good leveler, and ended up with about 3 stacks worth of mill-able herbs. Making stamina scrolls (for our lvling), scrolls of recall, and moonglow ink, I was able to push my skill to 75 to learn Minor Glyph research. I had to spend half my money to purchase some herbs to finish up lvling to 80(for midnight ink), and I milled my few mageroyal for 1 midnight ink. To post a glyph for 1.5g The next lowest price for this glyph was 4g… but I wanted the cash now. After putting this single glyph up on the AH, I had 5s.

2hour logout

Step 2: The glyph sold. I took the money and did a few things: I purchased more inscription skills, learned my class skills, gave my son 20s for his skills, and crafted 2 more glyphs. I put the glyphs up on the AH then lvl'd to 14 with my son. During that time, 1 glyph sold as well as some fish I put up while fishing the dark grouper / gizmos for the Aberdine fishing quests. A quick Moonglade teleport before logout had me blow all but 10s to post 1 more item: Runed Arcanite Wand.

Being a new server, and having leveled enchanting 3x on different toons, every enchanter will want this limited availability recipie. I intend to buy it quite a bit and post on the AH. The cost is ~2gold, but you'd have to travel to Moonglade to get it. If you don't want to grind Furbogs, then this travel can be a pain. I'm willing to guess that people would just prefer to power level past this area and skip moonglade until later. Sure enough, the AH has 2 for sale at 100g and 25g respectively. I am flat broke. I post a 12hr auction for 12.5g and logout after buying a couple items for my toon (bye-bye grey vest received at lvl 5!)

Next day

Step 3: Everything pretty much sold. I have been posting every green item (at 40% DE profit for enchanting prices), every fish I could muster and I sold both of my minor researched glyph and the runed archanite wand recipie. I'm flush with 20g on my lvl 14 toon. (Not bad for deciding to do this 36 hours ago). I teleport to Moonglade, purchase another wand recipie, and then purchase 2 limited recipies that are definitely worth it powerleveling in Darnassus. (One JC, one Enchanting) and put them all up on the AH. I make another minor glyph from herbs posted too cheap and post it as well. I logged this morning with 13g on my toon and about 50g of auctions on the AH if everything sells. I have:
20g for the arcanite wand
10g for the limited bracer enchanting recipie (I'm the only one, and Darnassus is a pain to travel to)
5g for the JC recipie (darnassus is a pain, and next most expensive is 7g)
3g for my minor glyph
2g for a major glyph
~5g in 3 green items, which would make money (40% profit) if DE'd and reposted. (I may make a lvl 1 enchanter for awhile)
~4g in fish and other popular cooking ingredients.

When really low level, you HAVE to love small eggs… sell like hotcakes at 10-20s each, and the drop rate is huge. Crab meat, clam meat, crawler claw, etc also sell well. Browse free 'power leveling' cooking guides and you have a good idea what people will buy. When you're lvl 80 and got 100g from dailies, buying your mats for 5g to power lvl to 100 cooking is no big deal. When you're lvl14, 4g is a windfall… My son cheered at his 10s quest reward, for example. "Dad! I got 10 silver, I'm rich!"

My rough plan of attack is: to buy 1-2 arcanite wand recipies /day and do the daily research. I will scan herbs for cheap midnight ink bait in hopes of posting my minor glyphs. My son and I play 0-45m a day with ~20m being average. I plan on my AH activity to be about 2m daily with a morning and evening AH check, after checking my horde raiding server AH alts.

My first goal: have enough gold to pay for all skills while leveling (pretty certain I've already done this).
Second goal: afford mounts at 30/60 for both my son and me. I'm well on track for lvl30 mounts.
Third goal: 8x netheweave bags for our toons. I figure this will run around 50g. It saves SO much time and energy leveling. Most cost efficient big bag, imho. We're full on 6slot linen bags right now.
Fourth goal: buy twink weapons/armor to really enjoy the lvling process… I expect these to be VERY expensive on our new server… however, we are not BG-ing so I don't need THE best lvl19 whatever. Just the right upgrade at the right time.

I have been occassionally logging on and posting new glyphs / getting limited recipies. After 1 week, I am now at 85g and still at lvl 14 with my son. (We usually play on the weekends, and we were busy...)

If you're not -that- pressed on time, try running a few instances. It's a far better option hunting the AH for blues. Stockades in particular is a good one with that many quests to be gathered for it.

The difficulty there is- I would then have significantly more experience than my son. This makes even herb farming tricky.... I am almost high enough inscription lvl to make Lion's Ink. However, if I went to farm some, I'd surely raise at least 1 level before obtaining a stack of life root...

Running my son through instances is a possibility, but you have to seriously consider this: He's 8 and plays like an 8 year old. He's THAT GUY that you grumble at in 10-19 WSG who doesn't listen and does seemingly bizzare things. (Like bopping himself and not the flag carrier) I'm not certain that I want to put him or 3 random people through that experience.

He plays a hunter. Night elf, nonetheless... and he is a poster child of a Nelf hunter. At least I make sure he's specc'd and trained properly. Pet control, however, is a stretch.

Depending on Herb costs, you could always buy herbs to mill and incorporate that into your asking prices. You'll eventually reach a point where you can't continue skilling based on your level, but you can buy, mill and craft for pure profit, even at low levels.

I have been logging in 2-4x per week onto my lvl14 druid. My son has decided to play another game for awhile, so I'm just building gold to hopefully start twinking when he returns.

Gold total just went over 250g after 2 weeks of gold working (very casually). I really don't know how people can be broke at the game at this point. Inscription + JC drive up mats for herb/mining, glyphs are a gold mine for a low lvl toon, vendor recipies are serious moola... basically if you spend 20-30m a day you can easily sustain whatever you need for a lvling character. This toon is on a new server, where xfers are not even allowed, yet and the AQ gates aren't open.
