Notes from the Basement--Part 3: Serious Casual(wear)

Posted 07/22/08 at 1:05 PM by rhyd
And here it is, the long awaited casual section. I have a feeling this is going to be a little longer than I expected, so I’m just preemptively starting section 3, and will cover both high end and entry level options at the same time. For those of you who are only reading this section because this is the only relevant part, I mainly address two tiers. The first tier is a guy (with a job) that’s just starting out, and the second tier is the lesser known high end tier that quality-wise(but sometimes...

Section 2.6.1. Suits

Section 2.6.1.1. Regular/Routine Care

(You can get anything from a $3 hanger from Target on up). If you going to use a pants hangar, you want a really big clip so you evenly distribute the tension on the fabric, using the bottom hem. Don't leave things in the pockets. Ideally you will be gently...

Leffot (NYC) - www.leffot.com

And finally we now come to the all important section on shoes. Nothing will ruin what you're wearing faster than poor shoes; you can spend $10,000 from the ankles up and still look like a chump if you wear awful shoes. Shoes make or break what you're wearing--nothing screams poser more than expensive clothes and cheap shoes. Seriously, you can make $30 Levis (514,...

Notes from the Basement--Part 2.4 Socks: a Slippery Slope

Socks are some of the least expensive indulgences on an absolute dollar scale. However, on a relative scale, they can be some of the most expensive on a per use basis, with a 100% cashmere sock. The basic rule is to match the sock to the trouser, but do try and avoid black socks with black shoes otherwise it looks like you're wearing a black bootie.

Sock styling I will leave entirely up to you, however, once you move beyond the standard business dress rib sock that small patterns...

Notes from the Basement--Part 2.3: Beyond Suitable Suits

Here we come to a contentious issue: MTM vs Bespoke. The definition of bespoke as put forth in a by the Savile Row Bespoke Association (SRB), involves having an expert cloth consultant for over 2000 fabrics, and incorporating 50 hours handwork including hand stitched buttonholes. While the legal dispute failed for SRB, for the purposes of this discussion when I refer to bespoke, I will be referring to the tailors that (more or less) hold to this standard.

Currently, the trend in...
