TheoryCrafter vs The Unwashed Masses
Last time I talked about general theorycrafting and the blizzard forums. Today I'm going to go through a bit more detail about the sort of things that I run into as one of those TC types. By now I assume most people that read this Blog are aware of the Shaman: Elemental Theorycrafting Think Tank (or TTT for short) entry, and my ever evolving spreadsheet, SIEC (stands for Shaman Elemental Item Comparisons). There are also a few threads going in the Class Mechanics - Shaman forum as well.
Part of what I try to do is to make sure that all the necessary information is available for Elemental Shaman, mostly via the TTT entry. While there are some differing opinions and playing styles (optional talents to take, whether or not to use Chain Lighting in rotations, etc), I try to make sure that all of those options and (valid) opinions are covered. However I tend to avoid the overly basic things like giving example stat weightings (aka Equivalence Points), Best in Slot gear lists, or enchants, because these things should be covered by other points in the entry, or on Wowhead & Lootrank via the links generated in SEIC. In other words, I try to make all the information available, but I don't plan on doing all the work for you either.
A downside to doing this sort of work are the questions people ask. Good examples can be found in The BanHammer, which is fairly well populated by people who didn't read or follow the rules. Unfortunately, you can't banhammer PMs, or random level 1 alts on your server. An example of the sort of PMs that I receive:
This follows the typical format for this sort of message. A greeting, attempted flattery, statement how they've already searched for the information, a question that could have been answered via said search, and then a thank you for the information that they're expecting. Generally I'll ignore these users (mostly if they have zero forum posts, and registered the same day they sent me the PM) or suggest they post it on the class mechanics forum.
Here's another good one (and by good I mean bad), although it should be noted that this was sent prior to patch 3.0.8
This user had registered the same day they sent the message, and has not posted anything since then. These are the messages that I really wish I didn't receive, because they can usually be answered by reading the threads/TTT entry first. Messages about things I screwed up in the spreadsheet or TTT entry are perfectly ok, because I do make mistakes like that (hey, I'm only human).
The level one alts that are created specifically to talk to me to ask questions are worse. When I'm logged on, I'm on to play a game. I'm not on to answer questions from people, be they random level ones or friends of fellow guild members. It'd be like someone asking you how to play while you're in the middle of playing it.
So in general, no matter what class you play, make sure to read both the class forum and the TTT entry (if one exists for your class). Then if you can't find an answer make a post in your class mechanics forum, because the people that you'd PM or ask in game are players too.
PS: after reading this before posting it, I imagine Blizzard forum posters like Ghostcrawler have it worse

Hello Bink,
Sorry to PM you for this info, but I have looked all over the Shaman forum and have been unable to find a post which states the Hit Cap for Elemental Shamans. I looked at your spreadsheets, but may have missed it if it was in one of them. Would you mind telling me the current hit cap now and if you know, post patch? Or if you know the thread I can find this info, the link would be great as well. Thanks for any info.

Hey, I'm new on this forum and all these figures are a little confusing for me.
I'm doing around 2.5k dps in raids and apparently I can do more but how? I push my dps as hard as I can. Do you know a rotation I should be using? Atm I'm using FS-LB-LB-CL-LB-LB-LvB.
Also would like to know what glyphs I should be using... I have the LB one, LvB one and 30% buff from Water shield one, do you think also if I should be going for lots of haste or crit? I'm in a guild, cleared all content so far, just need a few tips. Keep reading up and the more I hear the more I think about what I need or don't need. Just would like a simple answer, thanks
Plz help!

Blizzard posters, on the other hand, can't be PM'd/messaged by lvl 1 alts.
Somewhat along those lines, I am curious where you find the time to do all your theorycrafting/answering posts on the forums/etc. Do you do it during downtime at work, at home but away from your normal playtime, or alt-tabbed during in-game downtime (or something else I have not thought of)? |

A combination of all three really. I don't alt-tab though, because I have two monitors.

Bink i can't even imagine the brain bleeding hell that must great your inbox some days, or even worse your logins.
The Shaman community is far better off for your work. A heartfelt thanks. |

Probably my first post anywhere on EJ. I lurk, I read, I test and go with what works best for my style.
Bink: You rock, thank you |

I work a lot in technical writing and I think you miss the whole point of providing information.
For instance, when I started writing training materials and technical documentation I wrote as the person I was. Knowledgeable about the subject and it's intricacies. I knew what I was talking about but the random new guy who didn't have my level of information and understanding... didn't understand. It's great that you provide information but the way in which you provide that information is poor. Bordering on completely pompous as well at times. I don't particularly care because I understand it. However, I did have a kid on our server (age 14 or 15 I'm guessing) asking me all these questions when he tried to use your information because you don't provide it to someone who doesn't have your level of knowledge. Taking a less pompous attitude and realizing that not everyone understands the math you put out is a good way to start. You don't have to write it for the idiot but making the information easily searchable and easy to understand, and most importantly giving direct answers instead of splooge of math and theory with it is the best way to go. I also referred him to the sticky on the elemental wow shaman forums which is by far a much better entry than anything we have here for someone who just wants to play better. Which is sad really. |

Then there's two mistakes that you're making.
First, the assumption that the TTT is a beginners "guide to how to play", which it's not. Secondly, I get people complaining at me that my guide/spreadsheet are hard to use, but no body actually tells me what they find difficult about it. If they're confused over the hit cap then I'll probably ignore it, but if it a valid point I may actually change the entry. Of course, it appears that you and that kid are the people who don't actually understand that I'm not being a pompous ass, because the way I think & use words seems different/more technical than most. |
