The Other Side of TheoryCrafting

Posted 03/26/09 at 5:29 PM by Binkenstein
It's a pretty universal law of the internet that where-ever you find someone voluntarily doing a website/forum/etc, there will be people that demand more. In WoW circles, it's the TC types that get this more often than not, and these forums would be another example.

Lets look at EJ first. There are a number of rules which the forum operates around. These may be a bit more restrictive than most forums, but the upside of this is that there is a much higher "signal to noise ratio" (which means there's less random crap getting in the way of useful posts). Sometimes users don't learn from the infractions, which invariably means they get banned from repeated rule violations, but on other occasions they react... aggressively... to the infractions (and warnings, which are 0 point infractions). These result in the somewhat amusing (to the older members & benefactors bar residents) "Mod Sass" infractions & bans. You can search in The Banhammer to see some examples.

From the TheoryCrafters side of things, it can be a bit frustrating to spend many hours working on something only to have Random Person X come along and say "why aren't you doing this?". Sometimes these suggestions are good, sometimes not, but there are a few occasions where the not-so-good suggestions have resulted in rather abrasive comments from the posters when their suggestions are turned down/dismissed.
An example of this occurred earlier in the month on WoW Warlock DPS Spreadsheet. When Leulier stopped developing his lock spreadsheet, Bakka picked up where he left off. Releases have stopped due to outrage by one user in particular when Bakka said he would not be maintaining two different copies of the sheet, in order to give support for Excel 2003.

In both of these situations, there are demanding people who expect others to bend over backwards to provide them with everything they want. As with the real world (maybe I should capitalise the R & W there), this sort of behaviour is generally not tolerated for very long. This is quite possibly why these forums are so popular, yet equally despised by a certain portion of the WoW gamer population (hint: this latter group tends to consist of the demanding types that didn't get what they wanted and were banned). In the same vein as the forums, treat your theorycrafters, spreadsheet authors, guide writers with a bit more respect, otherwise they too may decide that it's not worth it and "throw in the towel". This will result in fewer informative posts/blogs/etc, fewer spreadsheets to rate your dps/gear, and a poorer online community because of it.

I can see why someone would get upset that a TC doesn't support Office 2k3, but in reality it's really not that serious to flame a Spreadsheet Author just for this infraction, I'm sure the way the community is someone would have done the said flamer a service and just convert the file for him and let him be on his merry way if he/she asked nicely(mom was right), but it seems that the "WoW Crowd" tends to adhere to the MMO stereotypes: Spoiled Brats and Cry babies in which mess things up for everyone.

Sorry for any redundency

It's not just TCs, whenever you are creating value, someone will step up with their 'idea' of what the value should be, which is only natural, as different people have different value systems (stat weights, heh).

In Real World, people tend to view their behaviour in the perspective of their environment and exposed identity, interwebz is giving them the freedom to bitch and fret without any real threat of harsh consequences. It's taken mankind millenia to develope social system, with hundreds of flavours based on cultural background, religion, blah blah. We have a long way ahead of us to create and maintain such system on the internet.

In this regard, I would plead with the authors, rather than the bitching audience, to embrace the responsibility they have taken upon themselves, learn to deal with/ignore the crap and provide the benefit you are providing, because there are many individuals not vocal as the ones you are referring to, but those people realize and appreciate your tremendous contribution to (in this case) TC. You are a bunch of (WoW) celebrities, you know? You need to learn to live like ones. Where can I donate you some cookies?

Oh and on topic of spreadsheet availability, you could dump everything into assembly code and it still wouldn't be enough, so until you decide on the universal TC format, you might have a look at what's wrong with the TTT entry on google.docs, as it looks like a BBC code, when I load it up Keep up the good work!

-- EDIT --
Added URL to the TTT entry I was mentioning and some grammar to boot. Yes, I'm an idiot, disregard/delete the (TTT) comment, please.

In a way you are right (Bink is probably the most "famous" shaman in the world at the moment, for example, though that is probably just my somewhat biassed view of the world). Just as long as you mean the type of celebrities that cure cancer, not the type that end up in gossip magazines (especially if you are trying to hint at them that they should take what they do with some sense of responsibility).

The thing is though, in the end, WoW is a game. Theorycrafters do so because they enjoy it, not for the good of humanity. The fact that so many of them release their results to the public is to our benefit, but it doesn't oblige them to do specifically what you want with their time, since after all, it is their leisure (even though some people do enjoy helping people just because, even those will reach a point where you don't really care that noob xyz can't do "insert x here" with their spreadsheet).

foolish_fool (= what I meant is that they are in the spot light more than the rest of us loitering around these parts (WoW/EJ forums/WoW forums, whatever takes your fancy), thus, they become sort of an authority in the eyes of certain individuals, to some due to pure awe/intimidation, to others through gained respect, by saying 'to learn to live like ones' I implied they should just discard random shit they get tossed with and do what they do best as long as it fulfils whatever purpose they are pursuing in doing that.

I see TC as a 'sort of science', it's a combination of maths, probability, sociology and IT, it may revolve around a GAME, which is intended to entertain, and there are individuals with this level of immersion, but people like Bink and others, have exposed the 'guts' of the engine and brought seriousness into the fun.

I don't know what motivates every one of the TCs here, but my guess is, most of them are doing what they do on a daily basis, applied to a game environment. I know I like tinkering, be it at work or at home Sometimes it's work, sometimes it's leisure, but most of the time, it's fun for me.
