The Death Knight Problem

Posted 03/15/08 at 7:07 AM by ebbv
So as I've got about 30 minutes until my ride gets here to take me to the airport, I thought I'd use that time to address a problem most of you have probably realized, but it seems that maybe Blizzard hasn't really fully considered. It's the Death Knight Problem.

Let:

T = The % of the player population that is Tanks

H = The % of the player population that is Healers

D = The % of the player population that is DPS

N = The...

What is "skill" for a guild in raiding?

How does a raid as a whole demonstrate "skill" in raiding? Does anything go beyond the sum of the skill of individual members at playing their own class?

Abananax, for example, seems to push for a boss-DPS-based definition, as evidenced by their aggressive advertising for their guild as "highest DPS in WoW" and creating the http://wwsscoreboard.com/.

However, while pushing high dps is sometimes a judge of your cleverness on an encounter ("Hey...

Mount Hyjal trash is a bit different from the norm. Rather than just sitting there (or walking around) the mobs all run towards you in waves. So the first tip is...

Posthoc - analysis of combat log entries

Posted 03/14/08 at 8:33 PM by pewsey
After some rather amusing efforts on Illidari Council (we can kill them, just some people are strangely attracted to fire) I've decided to invest some time in development of tools that can do posthoc analysis of the fights using different criteria to a standard WWS parse.

I'm interested in examining sloth like behaviour in getting out of AOE, as well as looking at consumable use (potions, bandages) and finally a more detailed look at combat such as misses, dodges, parries by both...

Using a 'Mitigation' Weapon

At this stage in the game, most of us get a good laugh at the almost assuredly awful Protection Paladins who run around using Warrior tanking weapons. They're usually the type that can only do Slave Pens and the Mechanar – but not Nethermancer Sepethrea, because she's "hard". We cringe when we join a group on our alts and we get one of them, because it invariably means that your connection is going to "drop" before the first boss, or that the police are at your door and you...
