Feature: Focus Targets!

Posted 05/03/08 at 9:48 PM by Yes
With the release of the Burning Crusade the development team introduced a Dual Targeting system for World of Warcraft. Players could now have two targets at the same time. It is now possible to target two players simultaneously.

What the heck am I talking about? Targeting two players at the same time? I’m talking about Focus targets. Basically, a focus target is a second target. The only differences between focus targets and normal targets are the way in which you acquire the target and how you cast abilities on it.

How to acquire a focus target?
Target someone and type
/focus

It’s recommended making a macro for this and binding it to a key on your keyboard.

Facts about Focus: Focus targets expire when you switch zones, when you reload your UI, when the focus moves really far away and when the focus stealths or goes invisible. The last fact makes focusing rogues, druids and night elves a harder job, you must make sure to refocus them if they stealth.

What can a focus target do for you? Well, it’s basically a second target. With a mod like Quartz you can see their casting bar, with a custom unitframes like Pitbull or Xpearl you can see their unitframes, including HP/mana, debuffs, who they’re targeting, etc. Focus targets make it easy to keep track of people, for example that pesky priest that manaburns everyone or that warlock that likes to fear nonstop. The fact that you can keep tabs on your focus easier isn’t the only thing that lets you respond quick to the threats, you can use abilities on your focus target without switching targets. Basically, every class should use focus targets.

Druids can use Focus Targets to cyclone people without targeting them, to keep tabs on enemy priests.

Shamans can use Focus Targets to Earth Shock people easily, purge people easily, and grounding totem incoming spells.

Rogues can use Focus Targets to defensively use Vanish, Cloak of Shadows to avoid people fearing and polymorphing them.

Warriors can use Focus to intercept mages polymorphing them, interrupt fears.

Warlocks, Hunters and Mages can use focus to silence casts and crowd control players. This is really amazing and how all the good players do it: they focus a paladin, DPS whoever they want and use a macro to CS the paladin without targeting him.

Paladins and Priests can use focus targets to cleanse faster (Focus a warlock/mage, see that they cast fear, use your “assist focus spam cleanse” button to make them amazed at your fast cleanses).

Paladins can use focus to avoid mana burns and being feared.

All nuke classes can Flash nuke with focus.

Death Knights can use focus to cast h$%^#%# [Oh, sorry Tigole, I forgot about the NDA. Five years in the prison camp in Antarctica? Are you kidding me???]

As I was saying Blizzard Activision, I mean Focus Targets, are the best thing ever. There are many uses for having a second target.

How to cast things on your focus target?
Focus someone, make a macro:

/cast [target=focus, exists, nodead] [] Spell(Rank X)

This will cast on your focus, and if it does not exist on your target. Insert correct spell, keybind, enjoy.

I appreciate you covering things that might be painfully obvious to other people. Since this blog is about how to improve in pvp it seems fair to cover the mundane with the more esoteric.
