I probably failed at searching, but I couldn't find any threads on this subject.
I believe that increasing your resistance to a particular school always has marginal gain (prior to your max resistance vs. a particular level, anyway). That is: 53 resistance is marginally better than 50 resistance.
A poster on another forum alleged to me that resistance is actually a stepwise function, where only certain values matter. Specifically, he claimed the following:
The effect resist gear has on actual resists is stepwise in said fashion:
0-75
76-150
151-225
226-300
301+

Does anyone know for sure? Has anyone done any investigation?
N.B. This person also claimed this information was taken from an EJ post about AQ40 back when it was released, but I was unable to locate that thread.
