Uh, how many people do you have fishing, and are people just mindlessly casting, or actually fishing, reeling it in, and catching things? Some of the stories I hear about Lurker are ridiculous. If you only have two guys fishing or something, then yeah, it's going to take forever, but that's your own fault.

We had...4ish people the first night, we've bumped that up to maybe 10 now but, we haven't really given him a second glance. Each one was reeling in their casts whenever they could.

At the end of it, someone put down their picnic umbrella and we started staring at that.

With ~8 fishing typically for us, we've had it take as long as ~4 minutes (I've had to redrop totems twice), which is way too long to stand around waiting for a boss, but a far cry from some of the numbers I've heard. Either we're extraordinarily lucky (unlikely given the number of times we've fished him up now), or people who say it takes them 10 minutes to fish up Lurker are only using a couple of people, or people are doing something wrong.

You're lucky. We've had 15 people fish, not just spam casting, and it took 20 minutes to hook him.

Edit : The average does seem to be 2-4 minutes, but we've had varying long times to fish him up, and thats pretty unacceptable I think. The most effort in spawning Lurker should be cast once and out he comes rather than fishing up STV fish for an undetermined period of time.

Your cast(and catch) need to land in the center area of the 'strange pool' - althought the swirls reach the far edges the actual pool is quite small.

On one attempt yesterday it took us 7mins to fish up lurker, this could very well be the reason. Thanks alot for the tip!

On average, we take about 3-5m to fish him up. Far from the 20 minutes some people report, but still, very poor design in my opinion. Especially on a learning night where people are restless.

They should just put in a gong that we can ring with a mallet. Have people be able to fish up the mallet with 10% frequency (meaning put 5+ fishers to work and it'll take <1 minute). Make the mallet disappear if you zone out. Simple, effective, and as the icing on top, it'll bring back memories of ZF and Gahz'rilla!

Anyhow, thank you for your responses, all. It sounds like to some extent, my theory of our inconsistent raid composition and the fact that experience is irreplaceable to be somewhat correct, but it also sounds like I should probably do a better job with the contingency planning. The randomness of these encounters does, in fact, need to be dealt with in a more meticulous manner.
The middle 3 Guardians despawn when the closest target (The one they would proximity aggro on to.) is in the water with them, before they climb onto the platform. They also seem to despawn after they are sheeped occasionally, but I have no idea what causes that.

Best part about lurker, is when people forget to equip their real weapons and run around with fishing poles equipped during the fight :>.

Anyways i do agree that having to fish for a boss(making it random when he is due to spawn) to make it spawn is probably the worst pulling mechanic in the game. Alltho the idea itself is pretty fun
