I recently moved servers / guilds and my search process was fairly in depth. The biggest thing to do is to know what you want to get out of a guild. To start I knew that I wanted to be a part of a guild that had a progression mindset with members that did not piggy back on others to get things done. From there I started with guilds that I had heard of and checked their websites to see their history, progression, rules, and goals. My situation was unique in a way because I play WoW with my wife and we both wanted to be in the same guild and be given an equal opportunity, so finding a guild that had the maturity to give us that was a little more difficult.

The EJ forums were a good resource for me as well. You can get a good idea of how guilds function based on various posts by its members and you can make a decision from there as well. The hardest part of a transfer is knowing if you are making the right choice when you click that "Transfer" button. In my eyes I didn't want a guild to look at my armory profile and send me a simple PM saying going ahead and xfer. I wanted to talk to the leaders multiple times to ensure that I had a good understanding of what I was expecting and what they were expecting of me.

Don't use absolutes like "no one". There are people who find that sort of thing a little amusing (I do, call me immature or pool me into "delusional misfits" if you wish), and that's not exactly a progressless guild weighed down into obscurity by their obscenity. They're killing Vashj and everything in The Eye except Kael.

Me, if I was guild hunting and they were receptive, I'd listen in to vent to see what the culture was like. I like a certain amount of goofiness in my raids, and it seems like that might be there.

I think the only thing Kaubel said wrong in that post was the word few; there are entirely too many delusional misfits of that type. It's not amusing, it's not goofy, it's stupid and unnecessary. Internet gaming culture is entirely too supportive of racial, sexual, and ethnic slurs.

Pretty much guarantee you none of the people in that raid would have been willing to walk down the street where I lived in Chicago and say that, nor where I was hanging out last night in Detroit, but give them anonymity and distance via the internet and look, racist slurs! Sexual slurs! idiocy all over!

I have no idea what that "nigger" means, but it seems obvious to me that it is some insider joke for that guild. If I ever saw someone who makes such a joke being stomped for lack of political correctness, I would know that the guild is nothing for me. Alas, if there is no clever joke behind that, I would also know that the guild is nothing for me, but for a different reason.

Either way, the guild chat and forum posts tell you a lot about the character of a guild. You should really spend some time strolling around the forums of all the guilds you seriously consider. While I do not really intend to make a transfer, I have looked around a bit last week, and I now have at least a list of guilds I will *not* join.

Hey, look. Someone defending their reasons for using "fuck nigger fag fuck lol" on the internet. What a shock. FYI, being competent at a video game doesn't make being an immature dick anymore funny that it would be if one were standing in the middle of the local mall acting the same way. I'd even give a certain amount of credit to a guild that spoke like that in private without feeling compelled to plaster their "humor" on the front page of their website. At least then, it'd show they're not complete attention whores.

I wouldn't put it on our frontpage, but I'm not about to completely write off a guild as jerks just because of a non-PC joke.

Actually, what I meant by it was we have a lot of minorities in our guild of all different sorts that enjoy the humor as much as anyone else, and we aren't a guild full of white supremecist KKK members that are all racist.

As has been stated already a couple times in this thread, when you're looking for a guild to join the front page is one of the first things you look at to get a good impression of the guild. I don't see why you would call it attention whoring, it does what a frontpage is supposed to do, give you an impression of the guild. I wouldn't want to put up some sort of "professional" front and try to make our guild look like something it's not, then recruit someone cross server, and then have them get offended when they see the whole "fuck nigger fag fuck lol" all over vent and/or guild chat.

On this, I definitely agree with you.

There are other examples that are just as, eh, crude. For example, as a woman, any website/forum that indicates that the guild typically asks for nude/lingerie/swimsuit pictures of their male applicants' girlfriends/sisters (and presumably, if the applicant is female, of herself) is a strong indicator that you won't be happy in that guild.

I will agree that websites showing a guild taking itself too seriously should also be avoided. Role-Playing nerds are almost as laughable as the yuckters making sexual innuendos in every other post.

So now that we've effectively turned this thread into something else, let me add that I never claimed those pictures or posts were indicative of racism. All I said was that it was a juvenile, ineffective, uncreative means of showing people how "funny" you are. The fact that it's taboo or non-PC doesn't even factor into it, and it's no different than the morons who are still going on about Chuck fucking Norris.
