Spells; Partially resisted crits

Ok, this has been bugging me for a bit and a while.

In short, there seems to be lost damage when crits are partially resisted. Today (unfortunately I am not able to supply any evidence here) I had a crit on Lady Vashj for 1900 (1100 resisted), and no I didn't read the numbers wrong. This makes no sense to me, when the average fireball crit is well over 4000.

I have noticed this earlier as well, might have been in the Hellfire heroic instances, where my scorches have critted for say 800 (200 resisted). Also a lot of damage missing compared to the regular 1500+ crits.

Where are the missing numbers? Is it my combat log that's reporting the wrong numbers? I find that hard to believe. If you haven't noticed this try to keep a close look on the added damage from the crit and the resisted part and see if it matches a normal crit.

If this is covered somewhere else, please help me out. I've been trying to gather info on it, but with no luck so far.

PS: I tried dueling a friend with 80 FR for scientific purposes. Got some partially resisted crits, but was unable to replicate this issue.

I'm not a pure caster, but perhaps the damage is being resisted, THEN having the crti multiplier added?

The resist goes before the crit, I believe. It's the same with PvP blocking crit attacks.

So assume you fireball for 1000 and crit fireball for 1500. If you get a 50% resist but crit, you'll see 750 (500 resisted), because first it resisted (the 500) then it crit the 500 remaining for 750.

That's roughly correct for your 1900(1100). You got a 50% resist, and then crit after it.

The crit is calculated off the post-resist amount.

Clearly law school has done wonders for me.

It's about right! Cheers. I think I knew this, but the log numbers put me a bit off :p
