I've gone to quite a few lengths...
The college I'm at now has crappy internet. Wow doesn't lag for the most part (can't backstab people if they're moving though and the like) but vent pings get up to 30k and it simply can't handle 25 man raids. My guild is currently doing SSC and the eye atm, and I really don't like missing out on the progression raids.
So, the other night I drove to Hastings and raided in their cafe. Some guy was already using the only plugin in the whole cafe. I started getting scared as we had wiped on Mag a couple times and I didn't know if my battery would last, but the guy left soon and I got plugged in. We were heading to do karathress and lurker after mag but hastings closed at 11 which was 9 server time. so after a wipe on lurker i jumped in my car and sped to mcdonalds. But... it was closed except for drive thru. So I sat in my car outside and couldn't manage to connect to their wireless but luckily someone's house nearby was unsecured So in about 30 minutes my battery was close to dying and my toes were freezing and I had to go to the bathroom : \ so I had them replace me in the raid. I dono what I'm gonna do for raiding bc I can't keep that up.

We were just starting BT and so we didn't have any extra people attuned. One of our shadow priests got a call from his GF who's car had broken down. He told the raid he had to leave to go pick her up. He got so much shit that he called her and told her to take a cab. Obviously not liking that response she bitched him out and he told us he really had to go get her. We decided to all chip in and pay for the cab fare for his woman, we wouldn't take no for an answer. He got to stay at the raid and Najentus went down =D.

I skipped Passover Seder with my family to raid this year.
Honestly, I'd have probably skipped it anyway. My whole damn family won't stop giving me shit about hopping between part time jobs while I work up the motivation to go back to school. >_<

So, my guild is working on Nefarian, I'm the hunter class lead and the main puller.
At the time, I was renting a room in a fairly large house that another family lived in. Apparently they screwed up something with the mortgage payments, and the father pulled some shenanigans, because next thing I knew it was Sunday morning and the cops had showed up to evict everyone. The new owners came and replaced the locks on the house and told us that we could call them to schedule getting our things.
After they left, I went around to the back yard, propped a rickety ladder on top of the old broken tool shed and broke into the house through one of the second story windows so that I could make the raid. It took some crazy doing, and the ladder feel out from under my feet right after I'd propped the window open, so I had to drag myself through. My guild was very amused to hear that my WoW addiction had led me to criminal behavior.
I stayed in the house for 7 days while looking for another place to live with a solid net connection so I didn't miss any raids

You got evicted and new owners took over the house, then you snuck back in and stayed for 7 days? That sounds odd, they must have noticed you and kicked you out or called the cops.

Oh god, I really shouldn't post, but at the height of my american WoW stories I definatly did crazy stuff. (or at least thought it was crazy, until I read most of the posts here :p)
Joining an MC raid at 2 am in the morning, raiding till 6, hopping in my bed so my parents wouldnt notice. Get up at 6:30, leave the house (walk to the bus stop), wait around the corner for everyone to leave the house, then go back in to get some sleep.
If for some reason people came home early I pretended I got off early because teacher was sick or what not.
Got away with most of it too :p
In the end I realized it wasnt really viable/healthy tho and joined the EU realms like a sensible european should!

Pre-wow I was a very social person who went out all the time and did well in school etc. About two years ago I used to raid with two guilds, of which one raided from 6pm - 11pm and the other from midnight - 4am ish. During that time I attended last year of high school, and was a completely wrecked person. I sold my account just in time to pass my exams, but shortly after started from lvl 1 and spent the entire summer grinding silithus to get decent gear for raiding.
I started raiding and dropped out of college after the summer, and to prove myself (due to weak gear) I had 100% attendance and once hit a person with my car, but drove from the scene to be home in time for raid rather than see if the person was ok...
I'm glad I've stopped raiding for good!

Been there, done that, except I had all four wisdom teeth removed. Even with the drugs I managed to run away when I had Wrath of Astromancer...the experience made me pretty unsympathetic to people who screw up on that. I think playing actually helped distract me from the pain. The down time for pulls, wipes, AFKs, etc. was pretty agonizing though.
Another day, a huge thunderstorm occurs while I'm on my way home from work. My train is halted a few stops away from my home. An hour later, my train starts up again and arrives in my hometown. At this point I'm already about 10 minutes late to the raid so I know I'll have to be on stand-by. My guild at that time had a policy where if you were up to a half hour late to the raid, you could be placed on stand-by and receive points (we used EPGP for loot). I flat-out sprint all the way home from my train stop and log on just in time to be sat for points...good times.

Being obsessed enough to be back in time for raids to completely rearrange my work schedule and staying in a crappy job because it means i can make it home in time for them.

I once led a raid over a cell phone. True story, but not as exciting as it sounds.
I also have done all the regular "skip class" and such to make raids. Lately I've been really bad about answering my phone when my parents call (I'm a college student) during a raid so my father bought me a new cell phone battery and mailed it to me (the excuse I had been usings was that my phone was dead for a week straight).

Not really a raid, but we had some arena scheduled one night. About 2 hours before time, one of our group's members logs in, and starts asking me where I live. I was quite confused, but eventually told him. He then proceeded to tell me that he wasn't the team member in question, but a friend, whom the team member had instructed to log onto his WoW account, and ask anybody online at the time ... to bail him out of jail.
Apparently this team member had been the victim of a case of mistaken identity, and had been arrested and positively identified as the perpetrator of a sexual assault. He had had bail set at $5000. He couldn't afford this himself, and called his friend, who couldn't afford it either, and in a last ditch effort he asked his friend to contact the only other people who would be willing to put up that kind of money just to make sure he was out by that evening (he had an alibi, but it would have had to have waited until the next day).
So I got the details from the friend, had to drive all the way across town at peak hour to where our team member was being held, and fork up $5000 of my own money to get him out.
Anyhow, he was eventually aquitted (because of his alibi, and the indentifying person going back on their description), but it was still a lot of fecking work just to get him on for arena points that week.
Nobody else believed us when we told them though

Right around the time Hurricane Katrina hit Florida my guild was working on Nef. I remember playing through the storm only to switch to a generator to power my PC when the lights went out. The area stayed without power for the better part of 3 weeks. I remember when i wasn't raiding i was busy looting from supermarkets and stealing water from FEMA aid stations (4 hour line in South Miami at noon in heavy humidity, theres no way I'm waiting its everyone for themselves). When i ran out of gas for the generator i went around different neighborhoods siphoning gas from cars to continue powering my PvE progression (8/8 Bloodfang was serious business).

Goddamn there is some hardcore lolage in here, I've only done the usual skipping work and ditching friends/family. Having to bail a guildy out of jail to make a raid has to be #1 most awesome thing ever.

While we were working on Vaelastrasz we always had trouble getting enough tanks online. Right before I was supposed to leave work on the day that would mark our first kill, I got a piece of rust in my eye (long story). I knew that if I went to the doctor there was no way I would make the raid, and a few of our tanks had already mentioned they wouldn't be able to make it either.
Also worth mentioning, at this point broadband internet wasn't available where I lived, so "connecting to the internet" for me involved a 10 minute drive to a friends house where I always raided.
So, I made the trip to my friend's house, raided for a few hours, and drove myself to the emergency room immediately after Vael died, all with one eye basically closed due to the piece of rust that was still in it. I somehow managed to escape the whole endeavor without an infection as well..

The whole last summer was an experience for me, balancing work and raiding.
At the beginning of the summer I only raided when my schedule allowed me to and nothing more. Realizing that this would only be 1-2 nights a week (we raid 4), I started making a greater effort to get back into things because of how much I missed it.
It was pretty absurd at what I had to do in the first place to raid on the days I have off. Drive 10 minutes into town to where my parents work with my computer in the back seat (56k at home, and DSL in town). Unlock the company building and hookup my machine then hook theres back up after I left. Now thats not too big of a deal, but being from Atlantic Canada and raiding in a west coast guild kinda sucks under these conditions. From 7-11 Pacific, or 11-3 Atlantic. But hey, whatever im use to it.
Whats really stretched it is what I did during the second half of summer, I started to make every single raid, which meant effectively staying up atleast 2 days in a row each week (max 3). I worked on a salmon farm during the summer, working 16 hours a day. So what I would do is get off work at 10:30 drive 5 minutes to my parents workplace (closer then what my home is), raid till 3 in the morning then either drive home to TRY and get an hour of sleep before driving 10 minutes back to work. Or what do what I did because trying to get an hour of sleep was pointless, just stay in town and drive 5 minutes to work.
Was tough ;(
edit: You could see how upset someone in my situation would get when people complained for staying 5-10 minutes after the raid because they would only be getting 6-7 hours of sleep!

I remember laying beside my (now ex) girlfriend, sound asleep as she was, and all tucked up into me. Any guy with a sense of decency would have just fallen asleep or whatever, but I managed to creep out of her and dragged my ass over to her laptop and launch warcraft - 45 minutes late for the raid but it was either that or sleep beside the woman. It's not on the same scale as some of you, but it meant something to me. Raiding > Girlfriend.
As for Christmas Day, I've done a ZG run on Christmas Day. Ah good times...

So a friend suggested i post this on your site, so here goes:
I live in Nebraska, during the spring months we have a ton of tornado warnings. One evening around 9 or 10 PM we were raiding BWL. I was a priest healer at the time and had WOW going as well as the TV. We were about to attempt Vaelastrasz the Corrupt. When the neighborhood tornado sirens began to blare. I told everyone on Vent "um, sorry guys BBL" they asked WTH! why? so i typed, "/raid AFK Tornado" in raid chat. One had attempted to touch down at the end of my street but fortunately it dispersed instead. I hid in my basement for bout a half an hour, sneaking upstairs to see how the raid was going. After the warning had passed I came back to find everyone pretty much still discussing and wondering if me and my dog Toto wasn't in Kansas anymore. I think we completed BWL that night for the 1st time ever.....AFK TORNADO

You know when you get a huge zit on the tip of your nose, and it's the day before a wedding that you're in and everyone in town is coming to, and you want to pop it but you just know it'd leave a gigantic scab, but all you can think about is how utterly stupid you're going to look in all the wedding pictures?
Well if EJ.com is the face of our guild, and the general forums are the nose, then this thread is that huge, freaking zit.
