Heh, I read all those over thinking, "now we're going to have to deal with idiots who randomly do their own thing to try to get achievements.." The WSG ones in particular look like they'll end up causing trouble.

I'm not sure you could make those NOT retroactive: If you have the item, you obviously completed the quest to make it.
It's the actual slaying of an old world boss that you can't exactly count since it's not being currently tracked.

For all we know Blizzard has toon histories for every raid we've been in. I would hope they make them retroactive, I have no real reason to go back and run MC again after Wrath launches to get a reward for killing a boss I've done far too many times already.

Well, MC will probably be soloable at 80, doing it once doesn't seem like too bad.

Since they clearly have a record of every quest we've ever done (otherwise you could redo them), the quest ones will be retroactive. I doubt they feel like filtering every single kill ever done (they might not even have that information), so kill requirements won't be retroactive (though they could just do something like wowjutsu does and credit based on loot). Personally I think they should put them in about a month before WotLK and let people complete the BC ones "properly," and not have ones for Azeroth at all because they will just be sily (wow, I completed deadmines at level 80, go me).

After running around for a while in the beta Sandbox, I'm quite impressed by how complete Northrend seems at this point, seems far more along than TBC did at the beginning of its beta. I'd go so far as to say that a November release seems feasible, if not likely.
Unfortunately, the major reason why WotLK seems so far along is largely because their goals for release seem more modest than TBCs. Not as many new instances, the major raid instance will be recycled and the other two will be one-shots.. it looks like the Ulduar Raid might make it in for release, but will likely be delayed into the content cycle even if it's largely complete to spread out time between the other raids to be released (Icecrown and the A-N raid.) A-N apparently being downgraded from a zone to a set of instances is a real shame, especially in light of how fucking awesome A-N looks right now. Overall, though, it seems that Blizzard has decided on which content cuts need to be made and will focus on polishing everything else now - and I'm happy that they seem to be focused much more seriously on having a coherent plotline in WotLK than they did in TBC. I'm curious as to what else will be in the WotLK content cycle, however.
But all that's not available in beta right now are the two high-level zones (Icecrown and Storm Peaks) as well as the level 80 dungeons and raids.

Launching with two tiers of gear seems like a fair target.

Ulduar is T8, but iirc the devs have said that WotLK will be launched with 3 raid instances - CoA 1-shot, EoE 1-shot, and Naxx. In any case, if we're looking at 2 years between expansions, delaying T8 for a few months even if it's close to being ready at release might be justifiable... arguably SSC/TK should've been closed at release until they received some PTR testing.

This thread gives some indication of what they keep. It sounds like there's a lot of info. If they can dig up old chat logs from months ago, then I would guess that they can dig up old boss kills as well.

Plus, they (used to?) have those statistics pages of creatures killed, most dangerous entities, items crafted.. And, they can do rollbacks to a certain extent during hotfixes/realm crashes... so I suspect they are storing a lot more than we may think. I for one really hope the majority of achievements are retroactively applied when you once met the criteria. It's also of interest that a lot of them are marked PlaceHolder at the moment, so they may still change them.

Personally i mostly like:
Naxxramas: Kel'Thuzad Hardcore - 20 people (25 person) In the 25 person mode of Naxxramas, slay Kel'Thuzad with only 20 people
Naxxramas: Kel'Thuzad Hardcore - 8 people (10 person) In the 10 person mode of Naxxramas, slay Kel'Thuzad with only 8 people
Challenging achievements are great.
|
The challenging achievements in the Dungeons and Raids area aren't fully flushed out yet. They are coming. Because we're still tuning that content, it's hard to come up with what would be the "perfect" raid achievement. Examples from TBC would be, "Kill Moroes with the 4 adds still up", "Kill Hex Lord with his adds still alive", "Kill Blackheart in one charm or less" etc... The Dungeon and Raid achievements thus far are what I'd consider to be the "base layer" with the more interesting ones still being developed and implemented.

Atiesh and Thunderfury are retroactively awarded because those items are based on quests. Sulfuras is not retroactive because there isn't a quest for the final item. But if you have the item on your character (bank or in inventory), you'll still get credit.

Straight-up kill achievements are not retroactively awarded. I know what a bummer this is but we can't track that information efficiently.
Also, there is no more 40-person Kel'Thuzad in Lich King... only 10/25.

The points they award also seem rather lopsided towards PvP, killing Illidan and winning one arena match both give 5 points. Though the points don't appear to do anything, so it's not much of a problem.
|
I agree that there's not much achievement in killing the old bosses. But I think it will feel better for new players and re-rollers to have those achievements in place from the get-go. Also, an important thing to remember is that achievements now track the date. Eventually, the date will become the meaningful piece of information and give validity to boss-kill accomplishments.
Regarding the points, they are entirely placeholder at the moment. We have a lot of tuning to do in order to get the points just right, so feedback on which achievements should be worth more/less is really valuable.
I'd love for achievements to get its own thread here but it seems like you guys make new threads about as often as we make new games...=P

A lot of server firsts (first class to 80, first on server to kill raid bosses) a few old-school things (collector's editions, exalted with brood), old PvP titles, and oddly, grand mastery with fishing/cooking/first aid.

The secondary skill achievements are in their own category, not parts of Feats of Strength.

Tigole, good to see you posting in this community. One quick question about achievements, though, do the points they give do anything, or are they just there to show others "hey, I've done THIS much"?

Right now, they only give cosmetic rewards: titles, tabards, vanity pets etc.
There is the possibility that we will do some attunements based on this system as well or that we will add some minor benefits such as consumables but right now the thought is that achievements are recognition of your progression, not the means of progressing.

Tying them to attunements doesn't sound like such a great idea unless it just amounts to fairly obvious ones like "Killed X boss in Y instance," in which case, however, that just seems the same as having vials on Kael and Vashj and I was under the impression that wasn't viewed as a good idea.

Yes, but I meant that once you've finished both the "Scryer exalted" and "Aldor exalted" achievement, you complete a new achievement which gives a lot of points. Right now, you get like 5 points for the Scryer one and also 5 for the Aldor one. A lot of ppl are exalted with either of them, so they get 5 points for it. Getting the other one is a LOT of work and therefore should also reward a lot more points. Therefore a new achievement should be in place imo.

I see no reason to be it account based. Would be weird to have a "exalted with faction X" on your alt, even if he's not exalted. Or "first rogue to hit 80" on your warrior alt.

It'd be interesting to have the Achievement system lend itself to some kind of personal upgrades, like being able to buy extra stats for your characters or something. Imagine having an "Achievement Tree" where you can spend your points...
Although really, I can understand why the rewards would mainly be cosmetic, especially if Achievement Points are tied to accounts rather than characters. People will tear out their hair trying to get Cenarian Circle exalted at level 80 or whatever so they can get that +1 spell power augment. But imagine how much fun people would have organizing AQ40 raids and whatnot and seeing old content so they could get some Achievement Points.
If player housing were ever implemented, decorations for Achievement Points would be the natural thing to do.
Oh, and there's a distinct lack of a Bloodsail Pirate achievement. There should be a few wonky ones like Tuskarmaggedon in any case.
Maybe we can start a "Save the Tuskarmageddon Achievement" petition?

Well, in a sense, clicking Unlearn Profession on, say, blacksmithing, and learning tailoring instead is a lot of work too, but it makes no sense to add achievements based on that. Your errors, or your desire to change such things are benefitting your playstyle, and achievements will display that - in your particulr case, they will display both Aldor and Scryer rep achievements. Adding anything else beyond that is cluttering of a system.

As far as achivements being tied into progression has there been any thought to useing them for a form of alternate advancement? an example would be a seporate set of talents or spells or abilitys? WoW is an awsome game but at max level the only way to realy progress is gear which if you don't have much time to play each day, can get frustrating or if you play all the time just gets boreing when your not raiding. I have been waiting for a form of alternate advancement for this game for a long time. I think it would add a ton of content for the min max croud as well as another way to advance your toon when your not raiding.

Went from "holy damage" to "holy spell power".
[Ring of Unrelenting Storms]
Went from "nature damage" to "nature spell power".
I'm curious whether this applies to all holy spells, or whether healing spells pick another "healing type/school" spell power.
For comparison:
[Primal Mooncloth Robe]
Went from "healing" to "spell power".
[Spellfire Robe]
Went from "fire/arcane spell damage" to "arcane/fire spell power".

From earlier in the thread.
According to the new ranks of Inner Fire, from Priest - WotlkWiki - Wrath of the Lich King Information
A burst of Holy energy fills the caster, increasing armor by 1800 and healing spell power by 95. Each melee or ranged damage hit against the priest will remove one charge. Lasts 10 min or until 20 charges are used.
(450 Mana, Instant)
So there likely will be healing specific spell power, though I've yet to see any gear with healing spell power on it.
Edit: Wording

There already is an achievement for being exalted to both Argent Dawn and the Argent Crusade, while they each have their own achievement as well. That makes less sense than an "Aldor + Scryer exalted achievement".
