What sense does taunt even make? What does some gnome know from his martial arts training and fencing skill that allows him to hurl an insult so hurtful at an omniscient god from the beginning of time or a scheming old black dragon that has manipulated mortal politics rise and fall since the dawn of civilization?

Granted, most raid mobs are immune to taunt, so it's mostly the not-as-godly combatants that find their mothers so heavily insulted by a massive putdown that they're compelled to charge after the warrior.
Personally, I like to think of the the tank as the most *arrogant* of the group. Imagine you're the Foozle, and this mere mortal has the sheer audacity to waltz into your lair and challenge you. You! Destroyer of worlds and devourer of babies everywhere, being stared down by one man in an extravagant suit of armor and a really loud voice.
In a similar vein, threat increasing abilities would be the equivalent of pinpricks - it doesn't actually do a lot of damage, but it STINGS! Inversely, threat reducing abilities equate to your character's ability to remain inconspicuous - that's why it's called Anesthetic Poison; the blade is covered in something that numbs the wound as soon as it gets inflicted, so the mob doesn't really notice he's being killed.
