Digital distribution is the way of the future. I think the only dumb thing about Steam is when you have games that aren't designed to be distributed via Steam in the first place (Company of Heroes). Otherwise, I think it's a great program and I don't really get the hate for it.

Steam used to have a lot more problems than it does now, so a lot of people hate it because of how they remember it at its worst rather than how it currently behaves. Also, when you do have problems with steam, they're a huge pain in the ass especially when you know that you wouldn't have had that problem if you had just installed it from a CD or whatever.

Personally, I never really had any major technical problems with steam, even near the beginning. My problem with steam is just that someone stole my account with HL2 on it and bought some stupid popcap games on it, so now any time I use my CD key to retrieve it, they can just use their credit card to re-retrieve it, and Valve's customer service is too retarded to fix it.

People try to upgrade bad computers, then they whine. Part of it is also that adoption of Vista is still fairly low, so you have tons of people who are three or four steps back from anyone who is actually running Vista who will swear up and down that it's complete garbage. It's a lot of fun to deal with as sales.

I like Steam conceptually, although the practice irritates me. The addition of a points system similar to XBL points would be fantastic for losers like me who don't want to get credit cards.

Meh, it's weird/random/inefficient but honestly it would work just fine for farming random stuff. I wouldn't advocate it but hey.
