Could the Jania sound file "he kept it all these years" just be a red herring? Blizzard put in the sound files to try to throw us off from the actual ending?

Another obvious possibility is that the faction leaders join the fight at some point in the heroic Lich King encounter.

"Obi Wan killed your father"? That's certainly a possibility but the whole point of some misdirection is to point us towards or away from something and I'm just not seeing the too or the from anywhere.

Sounds like a simple "Kill creature and get its tooth/liver/most prized object" quest to me. Except said creature is the final boss of the game. Doesn't make the quest structure that different, though.

Edit: What I mean is I don't think there's any hidden gameplay mechanic for Arthas Heroic. It's "get item from boss, hand it, get a reward". A natural thing for such a powerful boss and lore figure. There was that Varian/Garrosh rumour a while back, however.

I doubt they would of bothered doing voice acting for multiple characters to trick players (the red herring masks were such bad quality it was obvious). Now the items have been in the files since the current patch but the quests themselves are new in 3.3.3. I'd imagine the Personal Property is the initial quest and then it goes on from there.

Personal Property - Quests - Sigrie
Mograine's Reunion - Quests - Sigrie
Jaina's Locket - Quests - Sigrie
Muradin's Lament - Quests - Sigrie
Sylvanas' Vengeance - Quests - Sigrie
The Lightbringer's Redemption - Quests - Sigrie

On Vol'jin, I may be overvaluing this, but I'd say his new armor (and maybe even individual model) does hint that he would play a larger role or at least become a more interesting character.

Retcon? That he is the target of an Alliance quest doesn't make him dead, actually. He gives Horde players nearly a dozen quests, including one for Ramstein in Strat. Of course the Alliance raid on him could've taken place afterwards, and the fact there was no mention of him in WotLK, where many characters from Classic reappeared in Northrend, speaks against his continued (un)life, but we can't be sure until Blizzard decides what should happen to him. That he has a certain reputation among Horde players could save him.

In the same vein, do you consider both Barov brothers to have simultaneously expired, or do you consider them to be in a perpetual feud? Is one dead while the other lives?

They may not be major lore characters, but each gives a quest to kill the other.

This doesn't mean that either is dead in canon. It could easily just be used as a device both to promote World PvP and to create a feeling of actual conflict in the world.

They want each other dead, do they ever really succeed? Until there's an official stance by Blizzard we won't know.

The Alliance wants Nathanos dead. Is it canon? Is it any more canon than Tyrande being dead because there's an achievement for it and no one ever goes to defend Darnassus?

It's hard to say until Blizzard confirms it themselves. Not all quests are canon just because you can complete them.

These quests might also be related to the shadowmourne chain. A follow up to the quest requiring you to kill LK after shadowmourne is crafted.

That would make no sense that any of those quests would be remotley related to Shadowmourne (there is already a quest to kill Arthas after it's crafted also).

Well, That didn't stop Kael and Kel'Thuzad, did it? I'd reckon it's pretty plausible that he was simply too busy training the forsaken hunters to make a show in Northrend

Except Kael and Kel'Thuzad weren't truly killed the first time around.

Kael was, technically. Blood Elf soldiers mention that in the Isle of Quel'danas. Something about the demonic priestess showing up right on time to save Goldielocks. It's just a case of adventurers who deal with death-defying villains all the time not checking the goddamned body. Who cares, we got a shiny green sphere...

Kel'thuzad's case is different, we never got to enter Naxxramas in Azeroth. Darion did.

He got demonic CPR, we didn't cut off his head after we defeated him, so he's far from dead by Warcraft standards. Not to mention his speech in Shattrath was put in before IQD.

Yes, IQD (or something like it) was already meant to happen, at the time of his "Hail Demons" speech.

Honestly, though, I thought we'd killed him for real at Tempest Keep. We were doing such a good job at wiping Illidan's forces, what with Vashj and all. With so many "anonymous" bosses dying for real, the truth is Blizzard actually has a good "Not Dead After All Villains" ratio.

Q. What did Yogg-Saron have to do with the Lich King? It seemed like a strange tangent to make in the middle of the expansion?
A. Did you do the quests in Icecrown? Quick answer: the existence of an Old God in Icecrown had a lot to do with the ability for mortals to become corrupted.

Q. With the Lich King defeated, in Cataclysm, will the Plaguelands be green and beautiful again?
A. Western Plaguelands will finally be free of the plague in Cataclysm. It’s hard for the Scourge to survive without their beloved Lich King. I guess this means we need to rename the zone?

and

Q. Will there be any type of water mount, like, submarines?
A. We actually have two brand new subs that we made for Cataclysm. These submarines will be used as transports. We have one for gnomes and one for goblins. The subs are huge too! Both are about the size of the Gunships from Icecrown.

Which is kinda lorey since we haven't seen subs since Warcraft 2

What is the most important thing to you? Won't you grant me the pleasure of taking it away.

Stated in the Blizzchat:

"Some Tanaris goblins wisely invested in desert real estate and reaped the benefits when it became beach-front property."

"Western Plaguelands will finally be free of the plague in Cataclysm. It’s hard for the Scourge to survive without their beloved Lich King. I guess this means we need to rename the zone?"

The slide from Blizzcon of Alex in front of the color-coded world map has WPL and Tanaris as "green" zones, which had me thinking we wouldn't expect to see significant changes to the zone. My guess is that this map is outdated, but it's possible that what we thought of as "light changes" aren't that light.
