Who here carves pumpkins? Who likes to draw? I need inspiration. ;)
I'm not going to bother entering Blizzard's comp this year if they hold it again. I was so robbed with a piddly honorable mention on my portal pumpkin last time. Hmmph. The actual winner last year had definite skills, but 2 of the other winning entries appeared to be decidedly unabashed photoshops instead of actual carvings. I tossed in two hastily made entries last year 'cause someone said I should at the last minute. I figured what the hell if it meant a chance at a free collector's edition for a brief bit of enjoyable work.
First, I threw together a rough one and carved in about an hour, I think. I hadn't done anything like this in years so I needed to get used to carving pumpkins again. Naga with one of those duct-taped stick weapons. It came out pretty crappy in the shot, but it looked pretty slick in spite of its simplicity IRL. Heh.
Kiddie stuff, sure, but I hadn't done any relief sort of sculpture in ages.
My real effort turned out pretty well, I felt. I took a screenshot of an undead rogue in front of one of those Emerald Dream portals, then carved that. The camera didn't take very good shots of it, but you get the idea. The runes around the portal glowed wicked cool IRL and the various levels of detail were pretty impressive. Wish it had shown up as good on film. Oh well.

Undead at the portal.
I was hoping to have Chickensuit provide me with some material for carving this year, because his style is perfectly suited for the things I do. He's going to be too busy with RL stuff to toss anything my way, though. Anyone with art skills in the fantasy or halloween sorta theme is quite welcome to toss me a PM for information on what I'd need. I'm always looking for interesting things to do and I figure I'll carve at least one or two this year for friends and family to set out on their porches.
Cheers.
