The beta and live Client
There are alot of questions around regarding the possibility to play the game on launch through the beta client. It was possible for the TBC client, but I wanted to ask whether anyone has done it after 3.0.3 patch and how.
A plea to moderators: Please don't lock this thread! While this issue is a luxury situation in US, we have several major problems getting the right language for our client over here in europe. The problem is partly on the blizzard's behalf, because they reject to add an universal update option on their updating procedure.
For example, I have the english GB version of the game running, however all stores here only sell the german version of Wotlk.
Anyways, while blizzard employees don't want to give any advise and suggest that this solution will not be perfect either way, I would like to ask whether anyone has managed to log on to the game via the beta client after the 3.0.3 patch.
Thank you.

As far as I remember it just involved changing the realmlist for TBC, not sure why it would be any different this time around?

If memory serves, there is a difference. The last beta client build was 9195, while the patch pushed today is 9183. Unless there's another patch on day 1, the beta client may have a version mismatch.

9155 is the latest beta build, so its actually lower than live and i doubt you can patch beta client with a live-patch.

you can change the language back to german in the wow-launcher application. besides of the inconvenience of having to play a german wow, you should be fine. (and, of course, someday changing the language back to en-gb and having to patch your client again).
maybe the wotlk install dvd will have all european language packs available ...

If I remember correctly what happened with BC, I had to play with the french client for a few hours while the public torrent for the leaked enGB version was finishing, then just installed that instead. Sure thing is, there will be a torrent, and if we're lucky it will be up even before the real release. For BC I remember I had my game the day before it was released because shops were selling it already.
It's not a big issue really, just make a copy of your wow dir, then change language on either, use that to patch with your store bought dvd until you get the torrent for the english client. Only an issue if you're struggling with hard drive space.

We may be able to get around it by using lichking.mpq, patch2.mpq and patch.mpq from beta on the current live version.

I don't see the issue here in the euro-version language varieties. You can switch them around in the launcher and you can download the language packs. Basically if you have a german client and an english language pack, you just buy the german version of the addon and patch. I had absolutely no problem with this during the TBC launch, though i dont recall for sure if it launched a torrent for an updated language pack. But then again, i installed TBC from the CE's DVD which could have had all language versions.

I have seen the installer of WotLK on a german games news page and it looks like they indeed included all european language versions onto the DVD.
Wether it will be the language pack or the "real" version (enGB instead of deDE), we have to see.
I am in the same position. When WoW was first released I was in Great Britain and bought my copy over there (engGB).
For BC I got myself a enGB copy via ebay. Now that I live in Switzerland I preordered at Gamestop.
I hope that WotLK really includes all language versions or that I can just patch the beta client.
Because you can not install a deDE version ontop of the enGB version of the game, that is the problem.

Update Beta and Live to the lastest build (9155 / 9183).
Copy the wow.exe, launcher.exe and the realmlist.wtf from the original wow to the beta folder.
Thats all there is to do, atleast i can login with that on live and can play. Will see if thats enough for wotlk release.

Language Pack and switching to English is all that's needed... they fixed that some time before BC and made the game more flexible for different languages. I play in English and will buy the German edition of WOTLK (just like TBC before it) and don't expect that to cause any issues.
If you don't have the German client you could download and install it to avoid issues with different language editions of WOTLK. I think it is available through account management.

"You are better than I am," Inigo admitted.
"So it seems. But if that is true, then why are you smiling?"
"Because," Inigo answered, "I know something you don't know."
"And what is that?" asked the man in black.
"I'm not left-handed."

The Beta tech support claimed that it will not be possible to use the beta client for live play. Obviously there might be a possibility to "hack" it, but you definately won't be able to play straight away with it.

Was he referring to playing with the beta CLIENT or with the beta KEY? You absolutely CAN use the beta client for live play right now (by doing what Skulli said above).
What I'm hoping to be able to do is use the beta client and a WOTLK key to play right after midnight on Nov 13 (long story but can't get the actual game before normal store opening hours around here, and a friend will buy the game at midnight and send me the key).
On the topic of playing on an English client - we have always bought the German versions for all our accounts, and AFAIK, you don't need a language pack at all anymore these days. In Vanilla, we did use the EULP, and shed a lot of blood, sweat and tears getting our games ready for TBC (ended up installing the German version from the ground up, then simply switching to English in the launcher) which cost us a day of game-play. However, we haven’t had any trouble since (including the beta client), and tbh, until I read your posts, I foresaw no trouble with updating to WOTLK. Surely, if there is any trouble, setting the language to German in the launcher should be all there is to it, no?

It appears that you can buy any European version of the game and still get any language (read below for more details!), which confirms Marieth's screenshot.
The question got asked on the french forum: World of Warcraft (fr) Forums -> Langue d'installation de Wotlk. In this post, the CM links to the FAQ for WotLK in french (from french forum), which answers the language question as opposed to the English version. So here are the information texts in French followed with English translation.
|
Do I have to upgrade the game with the same language as the one already installed?
No, when you buy Wrath of the Lich King in German, English, Spanish or French, the four languages will be available in the game DVD. The language to be installed will be the one from the expansion disc by default, but you will also be able to chose one of these other languages. Players who wish to play in Russian will have to buy and install the Russian version of WotLK.
And important information for Russian players:
J'aimerais jouer en russe, cette langue est-elle incluse dans les boîtes européennes de l'extension ?
Les boîtes européennes de Wrath of the Lich King contiennent les versions allemande, anglaise, espagnole et française du jeu. Pour jouer en russe, il vous faut acheter la boîte russe.
|
I would like to play in Russian. Is the language pack included in the European versions of the expansion?
The European versions of WotLK come with German, English, Spanish and French language packs. In order to play in Russian, you will need to buy the Russian version of the expansion.

MMO-Champion BlueTracker - WOTLK CD Key.
Yeah, the blue probably didn't really understand the question in the first place, or otherwise didn't choose to answer it properly but, well, he clearly says you need a working DVD drive to play WOTLK immediately, as in, you can't play if you don't have the box in your hands.

You cannot delete that addon, it gets readded after restart of the client.
But you can rightclick the addon and disable the annyoing parts of it.

The problem is going to come if there's any differences between the beta/live MPQ files, and then there's a later live patch that refuses to update due to those MPQs being different (or, worse, attempting to patch them and corrupting the data).
At some point, it's possible you're going to have to undo the hack and install WotLK anyway. I realize most people just want to be the first on their server in Northrend or whatever, but for me, potentially having to undo the hack and install or possibly do a full reinstall (although unlikely, I think) just doesn't make it worth it.

Dont see the danger here, you have your live-client and the "hacked" beta-client (2 seperate installtions).
At release play with the beta one if thats possible, some days after the initial rush install wotlk on live-client and everything is back to normal.

Yeah, I guess as long as you don't delete the regular install, "ruining" the beta install isn't really a risk.
