I managed to run a check with the WoW Repair Tool on the lichking.mpq.
It checks out fine by not downloading any missing files.



My theory that the retail lichking.mpq is a merger of certain files from patch.mpq and patch-2.mpq is still possible.
Blizzard doesn't want people to copy the lichking.mpq (from beta) into the WoW Live Data folder and pull down all the necessary files for a retail Wotlk install before they officially release the product.

I am currently playing en-US WoW from the UK. In the past i used the Burning Crusade Beta client to play live, by fiddling with MPQ's posted on various forums. It would be good to use this thread as a resource of information for this.

For those of you interested, a guildie is buying me the game and giving me the key to upgrade my account. Posting the DVD to the UK would be too slow and as guild leader, not an option.

Why is an Englishman guild leader of an American guild? Good question.

I am very much hoping the Wrath Beta will be hackable to play live next Thursday.

Maybe a sidequestion in this topic, but should it be possible to play with an installed (via dvd) wotlk-client to play on live-servers before the account can be upgraded?
Because it was impossible to login into the game with a completely updated vanilla-client but a TBC-acount when I had to reinstall the game an just patched it up.

The repair tool really only checks for corrupted data within the MPQ and doesn't actually try to sync up what you have to whatever is current for that build. The downloads it usually does are related to repairing specific files it finds within the MPQ (presumably it's performing MD5 type CRC against individual files and comparing against what is listed in the sequencefile and only downloading replacement files when they don't match). If you use an MPQ Editor and manually delete stuff from an MPQ, it won't even replace what you deleted but still declare the file "ok".

It WILL rebuild the backup-enUS.MPQ file (or whatever it's called for your language) which does make it download stuff but you can do that without the repair tool by just deleting the file and rerunning the client.

About the most you can get it to do is revert you back to some known version if a file is really out of wack... like say if Patch.MPQ is missing. Right now if you force a revert of your live install, it gets set back to the first 3.x build, which probably matches what's on the gold master for WoTLK.

I'm in the same boat here. My current plan is to have a US copy posted to me and the Serial of that copy emailed. In the meantime I'm trying to find a way to play Wrath before it arrives.

What I am trying to work around are the different options surrounding buying an EU copy of the expansion and applying it to my en-US version of the game. Is this even possible? Can any version issues be resolved with changing the servers in the realmlist.wtf file and swapping out the en-GB localization files with the en-US equivalents?

Also, are the serials specific to the region they are purchased from? i.e., Would a US serial be required to activate Wrath on US servers or would the serial from an EU version be sufficient in conjunction with the file switching mentioned above. (I guess this is actually moot as I will have both serials on launch, but clarification would be nice.)

In short, I'm hoping to buy a copy of Wrath here in the UK and apply whichever serial is necessary and change the localization files and realmlist.wtf to en-US. Alternatively, wait for the box to arrive.

Yes, at least for BC I was in europe (and playing on US servers) and had to have a friend buy the game and email me the serials.

You could install the EU client and change the login server to US, Then if you have someone send you the serials you're good to go. One of the later accounts I made I bought the serials from ebay. You can also torrent WotLK files and buy the serial online.

I have just installed the EU version of WOTLK. It was a copy of the German DVD. But like already stated it was multilingual. After installation I had the German prologue, but could switch to English. Just had to choose it, close the game, and choose English again. The first time it didn't stick.

The installation just patched to 3.0.3 and I can use it to play on live.

I'll buy the key for a friend so I am quite interested on how it will turn out when it tries to play. I've sent him my beta client so he can attempt to solve it himself. Worst case scenario is that I will have to send him the content of the DVD once I get it, regardless it shouldn't take more than an hour with a decent connection.

It's been reported that 7-11's have broken the street date already, so chances are we'll see the retail dvd isos hitting the net pretty soon.

There's an eu torrent up already and seems the real deal. It patched properly and it works playing on live. Scaned with nod32 and didn't find anything.

Did anyone manage to successfully mount that image on a linux system? I can mount it, but it only shows a dx folder and the Installer.exe and nothing more.

I downloaded the iso, mounted and installed - it needed to patch up to 3.0.3 like was said by Blizzard. I can log in, but for some reason the interface seems a lot bigger now. Probably in the 30% range - we're talking about ALL elements of the UI, even things that do not have scaling options.

I had the same, but it works fine if you mount on a windows system. It might have something to do with it being also readable for Mac and it only shows you the Windows-only binary part and not the shared one that both Windows and Mac use (the Installer tome's).

There are 5 Installer tome-MPQ files plus one movies.mpq

Edit: Installing it and letting it patch up (it does this automatically after installing Wrath) lets you play normally on the current live realms.

Where the different files (except cinematics) comparing wotlk install with normal one. Checked lichking.mpq and it's the same file as in beta. Probably copying those 3 files from beta folder will give you the same result as installing wotlk and repatching.

Too bad i dont have windows installed anymore but i managed with another pc to get the image extraced on my pc.
Problem now is that the installer/wine crashes as soon as i confirm the language-dialog with "ok".

The mpq's are there, they are just marked with a hidden flag.

If anyone has their official DVD early, it would be very useful if you could post MD5 hashes of the installer tomes, setup .exe, and any other important/executable files.

This would help anyone downloading the client early from an unofficial source to ensure that they're installing the real thing, not something that's possibly been tampered with and may contain malware
