I have an 8800GT and sporadically I get a drop from 60 to 2-3 fps. Two things are always happening when it happens:
-a lot of AoE spell graphics (Blizzard, Death Knights, but also NPC effects like Grobulus clouds)
-SCT showing information
Doing a /console reloadui fixes it, so I am quite sure it is in part related to SCT.

That's why Blizz introduced the new animations system for graphical addons like SCT in 3.1.

Yeah I've noticed a big drop in FPS in 25-mans. My Specs are:
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core 2.0ghz processor
4GB RAM
Nvidia 8600GT
I'm currently running everything at the lowest settings (including spell detail), and I'm still having issues. Getting a new computer soon, but would be nice to know if this is going to change? I'll give the /console reloadui thing a try out, but you're not alone in this problem.

Hidden Chat Channel Spam!
I've been raiding mostly 10mans in WotLK and my performance is great there. However, when I did a Naxx25 pug last week, I suffered from great lag during boss fights and I had no idea what was causing it. This week I had all the settings turned down, and turned off most of my addons (including Recount), and yet I still lagged alot on most of the boss fights (my latency would suddenly shoot from 300ms to 2-3k ms and sometimes even higher).
A friend suggested that the hidden chat channel might be causing this lag due to excessive spam from addons that are being used by other people in the raid. He told me to download Snoop and see what it says ( Snoop - Addons - Curse).
I ran Snoop in a Naxx25 pug last night, and indeed I discovered that I was getting TONS of spam from other users not just in the raid, but also from guildies outside the raid! Carbonite for example was constantly sending me data from other guildies and I don't even have the addon. The culprit however seemed to be Healbot (and something called Healcomm, which I assume is a part of Healbot). The amount of messages I'd get from Healbot during a boss fight was unbelievable.
Now I'm not sure if it's possible to turn off the spam that your Healbot is sending (never used it), and this was a pug, so I don't really have control over what other raiders are using, so I couldn't suggest Grid as a replacement (especially since multiple healers were using this add-on.
What I'm looking for is a way to turn off or block incoming add-on spam that I receive through the hidden chat channel. Is that even possible? And if not, then what do you think I should do?
My computer specs are the following:
Athlon 64 X2 2.2Ghz (4200+)
2Gbs of RAM
Geforce 7900 GT

But the client is still receiving them, and need to check if it should ignore each one. I don't know how much cpu that would eat up, but I have heard stories of disabling addons like that to decrease network lag. But I don't think that would account for 2-3k ms like was mentioned.

Thanks for the idea prayfordeath, just recently I was in a n25 run @ 4h, and I just kept getting d/c'd, I had no idea why.... my connection is usually very stable and my PC is adequate enough to run wow.
I'll be sure to run that mod next time something like that happens.

That addon also helps to identify addon spam:
WoW AddOns - FuBar_AddonSpamFu - WowAce.com
Think there was a discussion about that topic "few" month back, especially recount and dottimer created a lot of spam.

Kind of an older post, but I think I found the issue on my end.
while downloading a TV show I missed via usenet, my computer froze in the exact same way. The freezing for me all started when i went from 2 to 4 gb or RAM, so I dida bit of searcing and it appear the culprit could be my wireless card (Linksys wmp54g v4.1 with the ralink drivers). Apparently this card has issue with >3gb of ram, and it has yet to be fixed. Still haven't got a new card to test, but I hope to shortly.

Is there anything that can be used as a benchmark effectively in WoW? I know flightpaths have been used, but they don't really put any stress on the machine with little/no NPCs. Raids and Dalaran would be good if they could be consistent but that can be rather hard to reproduce.

Feralas flipht path in my test was insanly stressfull with maxed out AA and AF so i wouldn't say its not stressing your PC enough but on the other hand i wonder how would be the results with 512MB card as high AA and AF just destroyed my card increasing the memory usage and bandwidth by a lot.
If you can fly through feralas with AA 8x AF 16x 1600*1200+ res with minimum FPS 35+ than nothing should be hard for your PC to sustain decent frames unless you have done something wrong with system/config and/or addons.
I am currently thinking about changing the R1950pro DDR3 256MB to something slightly better, since once i switched to new monitor and 1680*1050 the performance drops due to low memory are significant.
Anyone could provide some information about R4830 and G80 or G92 nvidia chip cards? 8800GS/8800GT/9600gso/9800 but only 512MB+ cards.

To be more specific I don't think that rendering terrain puts the same type of stress as lots of spell effects and detailed models.

I need some advice.. big time
currently i'm running:
Vista Home Premium 32-bit (no service pack, doesn't install ??)
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
2x 512 DDR2-SDRAM
SigmaTel HDA CODEC (sound)
NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE
I usually have about 12-15 fps which is fine for me but I tend to have MASSIVE lag issues in Dalaran, and sometimes raids but only if theres lots of aoe. Just wondering if people could link me some things to upgrade to? My last resort is to just buy a new computer, this one is about 3 or 4 years old now, warranty has been up so if i crash i'm screwed. Looking to spend under $1,000. (If i'm not supposed to ask this kind of stuff, >.> sorry?)

Without breaking the bank, your best bet is to get some more memory. 2x 512 is pretty low for Vista and WoW.

If you have a budget that big, I'd just build a new computer. I picked up a quad core Phenom 9850, cooler, PSU, Radeon 4850, 4 gigs of ram and a case off of Newegg for 500 bucks. Even factoring the cost of hard drive and optical drive, you can still make a pretty good machine for 600 bucks or so.

I've been looking into a lot of those AMD/ATI products for awhile, and i've really wanted a Phenom cpu, but i'm not sure if my motherboard will support it.. I know AMD makes there new 7 series chipsets (hot i might add), which are optimized for all there stuff, but i'm not sure if i should buy one of those as well

Not to sidetrack too far, but I had an HP PC for about the last year and a half, while it was okay out of the box I tried to upgrade the cpu and ram and it made the system unstable. Blue screens , hard reboots, and other errors hounded me.
I finally put the money down, and started again from scratch. I picked up a AMD Phenom2 triple core 720 Black Edition, with a biostar ta790gx motherboard, and I really enjoy what I have put together. Not only is the system stable, but the BE Phenom2 triple core is very easy to overclock due to having a unlocked multiplier. Went from 2800 to 3200 on each core, with no voltage change needed, just by changing the multiplier in bios. (going from 14x to 16x, any other change would require much more involved work to overclock)
What I'm getting at, is the motherboard and cpu compatibility is paramount to your system, and the best wow performance issue/tweak you can have is making sure these two components not only work together, but work well together. Research. Also, the BE core is amazing!

Currently I'm thinking of buying the following:
GIGABYTE GA-MA790XT-UD4P AM3 DDR3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
XFX HD-485X-ZDFC Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card
AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor Model [Box]
RAIDMAX SMILODON Extreme Black ATX-612WEBP 1.0mm SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Foldout MB Computer Case With 500W Power Supply
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders
all of this adds up to around $750 with shipping + warranties
I'm not too good at this, but if someone could check over those and tell me if they're all compatible, that would be awesome

While we are at performance I think QuestHelper will fit here. So basically I really like QH to show me where quest is, additional info on tooltip etc. However it also can eat much resources on defaults. I found that if you configure filters properly it will do its job and not take a lot CPU.
Zone Filter - This will limit tracking quests to ones in our current zone, not only limiting number of quests QH needs to deal with but also stopping all those unnecessary flight patch etc. calculations. If you quest you do stuff in one zone anyway.
Blocked Filter - This will stop showing/counting track to NPC before we finish a quest. So NPC icon to turn in quest will show only when we finish quest. Not only this will cut some useless calculations but drop some useless icons from map.
Watched Filter - This will make QH to track only quests you "watch" via questlog. As default log is quite bad I would strongly suggest better one like WoW AddOns - Bayi's Extended Questlog - WowAce.com Again this will limit tracking to only few quests we actually want to see, improving performance and cutting number of useless icons on map.
Those 3 filters above should basically fix all performance problems QH may do. I also turn off ant trails and party sharing and I would advise to do that also. /qh performance should not really be touched unless you have really bad PC. Basically by lowering this QH will use less CPU but it will take longer to calculate things so it will use CPU for longer time.
Keep in mind that all above will quite limit what QH does. I actually use it not as braindead following some arrow but as map tool so I can make decisions where to go myself. All in all with mainly proper use of filters like above I was able to make QH non-intrusive and eliminate any shuttering and other bad things that was happening from default QH.

I'm using the same motherboard and processor, and a different branded 4850. I've built a computer for someone else with that case, it was an easy process and the power supply has held up for him for over a year now. Check on the processor if you're getting a retail boxed version with a heatsink, or just the OEM chip. I got just the OEM chip and also needed to buy a heatsink for it. I'm using the Xigmatek 964, runs reasonably quiet, and is not wide enough to interfere with my RAM slots.
Also, you can use DDR 1066 RAM with that motherboard processor combo, and I doubt the price difference will be very much.
EDIT: Also, the default BIOS doesn't recognize Phenom processors, but you can flash it via USB drive. Instructions are in the motherboard manual, and not a problem if you have a spare computer that's usable while you're setting up the new one. If you aren't going to have access to another computer, shoot me a PM and I can give you the instructions so you're ready to go when the parts arrive.

Each time there has been a patch (and some times very sporadically after a patch) my comp lags out when i try to log my main into dalaran. Its always the same, I log in, graphics load but everyone around me is "unknown the noble" etc. After logging in and getting disconnected (this takes from 10-100 secs) what seems like a set number of times (around 10-20), I can log in no problem. This only happens in dalaran/wintergrasp, and I do have a sub-par system:
2gb ram
Athlon 64 3800+ @2.4ghz
Geforce 7800GT
Its pretty apparent its a people problem (amount that is), and what I'm wondering here is if there is any solution except buying a new system (which i will during summer/fall).

Log out in a less populated place on Monday nights.
I have the same problem, and have for quite a while. I'm not sure if there is a good solution. I usually logon with no mods and try to get myself somewhere without people. I think it might be a function of draw distance as well because when I can't login from my main computer I can login from the computer I use for auctioneer stuff, which has graphics settings at its lowest. I would do more testing but this only crops up after a patch and goes away after the first successful login.

I have the lag-disconnect with all PCs being "unknown" after patch problem, too.
The solution that works for me is to go to the World of Warcraft\Cache\WDB\enUS folder, and then delete all of the .wdb files there. (Back them up beforehand just in case - I take no responsibility if you blow up your computer.) This folder has a bunch of cache files in it for mobs, players, items, etc. I suspect the game is trying to rebuild them all at once, and when you do it in a really crowded place, it causes a massive meltdown.
Even after doing that, I try to log in a character in a less-populated place and run around for a few minutes, just to let the new cache files establish themselves. I don't know why this fixes the problem, but it has always worked for me.
