But short answer, yes. Run it on individual sticks so you know which one is bad.

If it is happening in the Ember Clutch (that burning forest area) then the problem is not on your side. See World of Warcraft - English (NA) Forums -> Freezes and disappearing mobs in Ember Clutch

I have the following system

i7 930 processor
1GB ATi Radeon HD5870
6 GB DDR3 1600 RAM
128GB SSD drive
running 64 bit Window 7 pro
Fatality Soundblaster pro sound card
1900x1200 24 inch Dell monitor

This is a brand new system with a fresh install of windows - I have made sure that all the drivers for the video card / sound card and mother boards are all up to date.

I have done a completely fresh install of WoW from my WoTLK DVD and updated to the relevant patch using the least number of patch files possible - i.e. 3.x.x - 3.2, 3.2 - 3.3, 3.3 - 3.3.a

I am running absolutely no addons (for now) and the config file is completely untouched.

My problem is as follows

When ever I change camera angles I get a stuttering lag where the screen will freeze for 0.25 seconds repeatedly for about 3 seconds and then it goes back to being completely smooth when I whirl the camera in 360 degree changes. It then remains lag free if I continue to change the camera angles. However if I keep the camera angle still for a while (i.e. while I type this) and then move the camera (or character) the stutter comes back. This stuttering occurs frequently during standard play when the camera angle is changed

This is more noticable when I am outside rather than in buildings, but still occurs when indoors. When outside I get fps of 100-120 when the camera doesn't move.

I have had all settings on absolute minimum and the problem still occurs. I have changed the screen resolution to 1200x800 and it is still there.

While this doesn't make the game unplayable it is very annoying given although the fps was much lower - it was more playable on my old core duo / 8800 GTS system.

This is a pretty high end build and I would have thought the hardware should definitely cope with the demands of this game.

This exact problem was happening on my old copy of my WoW install from my previous computer which I thought was due to set up issues with the hardware changes, But the problem continues despite reinstalling (and downloading) WoW. It occurs both when run from my SSD and the standard SATA harddrives.

Do you have any suggestions on what I should do to fix this issue.

I am happy to provide any further information (I have tried to be as detailed as possible)

Thanks in advance

After months for fruitless searching, and innumberable changes to the configuration file, I have finally found a solution to the stuttering in WoW. It turned out that there was a conflict between the packaged ASUS software (OSD and Smartdoctor), and WoW. The weird thing is these programs actually help my FPS in other games - but cripples WoW.

The solution is to either - completely uninstall them from the system - or go to the MS Config file - and prevent them from starting at windows boot up.

Dont just quit them from ctrl/alt/delete - that doesn't work.

Now that I have uninstalled these programs - I am completely stutter free and back to ultra settings and running smoothly at 60FPS outside and about 30FPS in dalaran

AND LOVING IT!

Thanks for reminding me I need to reactivate my benefactor account! It was definitely a bad stick of RAM, though. Thanks for the help.

Hey there. Big gulps, huh? Alright! Welp, cya later!

Oh my god! You're my hero! It was the exact same thing with me, same ASUS software screwing me up. The problem was somehow tolerable before the 4.0.1 patch, but after that the game just became unplayable for me.

Now I can enjoy it again, thank you once more!

Hey there EJ,

I have been having a problem with WoW performance. I have been getting extremely bad FPS in Northrend and in certain parts of old world zones (such as the canals section of Stormwind) or Shattrah. When I am moving I will get spikes every few seconds where my FPS will drop from 60 to 22. My FPS in Dalaran is around 20-22, my FPS in Northrend zones (using Howling Fjord as an example) is around 30 FPS, and my FPS in Stormwind canals is 22-24. In instances or raids my FPS stays around around 50-60, so it is fine there.

All of my settings are on ultra. These problems would seem obvious for a poor or average PC at this setting level, but my specs are as follows.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
Intel i7 965 Extreme @ 3.20 GHz
12 GB RAM
2 NVIDIA GTX 480s in SLI (Version 260.99)
Creative SB X-Fi
2560 x 1600 Dell 3008WFP

First off, Vaucent, try playing around with your water detail settings. I don't remember the details, but sometimes the new water just doesn't play nice with people's hardware.

On a second note, have you tried disabling SLI? Last I heard, WoW didn't "like" SLI very much, so you might get better response from your system with SLI disabled. You obviously have enough hardware that at worst, it won't make a difference.

Altering the water detail didn't change my FPS at all, but going out of SLI increased my 22-ish areas to 42ish! However in the Northrend zones I am still getting 25-30ish FPS.

Do you have DX11 enabled in the config.wtf? After i had enabled it my fps sometimes dropped severly (< 15 fps). Only a restart of WoW returned my fps to a normal level (~40 fps in Dalaran, 1920x1200, everything ultra). Taking a look at my cpu and gpu revealed that my gpu (HD5870) was at 100% load while my CPU (4x4GHz) was below 15%. After a restart my GPU and my CPU returned to normal load levels (~80% and ~50%). All this was fixed by disabling DX11 in the config.wtf.

Sound

I can't find a better place for this question and since a lot of you seem very knowledgeable about possible config.wtf tweaks here I go.

Since 4.0 I am missing the possibility in the sound options to only have the general "enable sound" field checked, while all others are unchecked. That way I was able to have my bossmod warnings ringing without all the other noise in a 25man raid.

Did 4.0 just break this completely or do I have to wait for the addon authors to notice? Is there a workaround to give me the same functionality?

It's ironic, how the video options are bursting at the seams and sound still only has a bunch of glorified on/off switches.

Before the patch, addons could play sound files even if the game itsels was muted - this is no longer the case. Addon sounds are now on the same 'level' as ingame sounds, i.e. the volume is the same as well, which makes sound notifications basically useless, at least for me.

I've even tried to replace all combat sound effects with zero byte sound files and disabling all other sounds to be able to hear addons once again, only to find out out that currently more than half of the addon sound just isn't played at all (very noticeable with BigWig's emphasize function).

Sound's just a big pile of shit right now. If anybody has a clever solution, I'd be very interested in that too.
Blizzard seems to be aware of that problem though, no clue why they didn't fix it before releasing the patch. It's not that this is a very subtle bug...

I do not see a DX11 option (DX option in general) anywhere in my config file.

Hi,

You need to add the string to the config file:

<Drive>:\WoW\World of Warcraft\WTF\Config.WTF (you might need to change it from read only)

Just add this line with quotes as the first line in the file:
SET gxApi "d3d11"

There is another way of adding it to the end of the short cut on your desktop, but can't recall what it is.

That would be "X:\Path\To\WoW\WoW.exe" -d3d11
However, if he doesn't find any sign of that in his config file, it's unlikely that he has it activated (as it doesn't do so by itself, you have to manually add it).

The issue I've been having lately is my combat sound doesn't stop. This happens only in a raid (live and beta). After killing a boss those combat sounds will continue to either play or loop for another 2 or 3 minutes. If we wipe on H:LK I have to hear the combat noises as we run back. If I go into the sound settings and change any option it stops. But will start again during combat.
