This may or may not be true, but there was a pretty sweet post about it that got deleted before it could reach 2 pages. Here's a copy and paste (original post deleted).

Opening Ahn'Qiraj Gate

Basically this is a server wide effort that requires a lot of turn ins.

Each turn in is worth 25 reputation for each of the 4 major factions. The available items for turn in include:

Herbalism: Stranglekelp, Purple Lotus
Skinning: Light Leather, Heavy Leather, Thick Leather, Medium Leather
Cooking: Roast Raptor, Spotted Yellowtail
Mining: Iron Bar, Mithril Bar, Copper Bar

Could be a way to get some faction before the gates are opened. Good to stockpile this now while it's easy to get, post patch everyone will want it.

Hey, I hadn't heard of the specifics.

Makes sense, though. I wonder if any of those turnins would even apply to level 60 characters or be available to us. They seem quite deliberately limited to the sorts of things people will see from level 1-45 or so, but not higher. I think the idea will be to have more "epic" stuff for the high-level players to do, but something like this so people of all levels can contribute somehow.

Considering the server we are on I'm interested in weather which faction does the stuff will matter in any way. Will Alliance log on to find everything already done or is the horde gonna have to wait around for us? Neither sounds too fun.

I thought it might end up having something to do with the number of Abyssal Scepters turned in on the server or something, when you get enough turned in the gates open.

Then again, I know nothing about lore, and that probably makes no sense.

supposedly after turning in all these materials it just gives access to the quest, which requires a raid, to create the scepter to bang the gong with.

Yeah, that's correct. Basically the way it plays out, it's going to be a war effort. Stuff goes down, and the Horde/Alliance decide to initiate a preemptive military strike against the Qiraji before the Qiraji/Silithids bring the fight to them. The entire Horde/Alliance needs to gather supplies for the war effort. That means massive amounts of ore, herbs, cloth, etc.. Once the foundations for battle have been laid, the epic high-end shit can commence, leading up to a world event that will open the gates.
