I know that some guilds when they're starting off have a list of what class has priority over other people when looking at some loot, did you guys and girls ever have one? and are you using one now?
If the answer to either of these two questions is somewhere related to the word commonly known as 'yes' would you please include it in your reply.

Yes, but come to think of it, it's never really been expressly codified. It should be. Once I get one together, I'll post it.

That would be greatly appreciated. I know that with the upcoming loot from AQ it might take some time if you decide to wait until a finalized list comes from Blizzard about the upcoming silliness. Come to think of it though, alot of the loot is class based from quests and whatnot...so it might not take THAT long. GL in there btw, heard some of those bosses are a total cock-block.

the basic idea has always been, what class gets the most benefit from an item, for what class is it the biggest upgrade, what class will use all the modifiers of the weapon to the fullest extent?
answer these questions intelligently and truthfully and at least 90% of all items will fall in place.

Yeah, -I- know this, and I have always run by that one word that most people tend to neglect while playing this game, 'logic'. Most of everything that we've ever looted has gone to the correct class, but it's still nice to have the logic on paper so that the people whom are lacking this all important form of thought can refer to when they have a nub-moment (or brain-fart, whichever you are more prone to).

The most important part of any loot priority system is consistency. For example, if you're going to give mages/locks priority on heavy caster DPS items (which you should), then do it universally and in the face of bitching from priests because they want Snowblind Shoes. Write it all down ahead of time so you have an objective backing to your loot distribution decisions that everyone can see.

I suppose that is when you get issues with hybrids then. There are very few items and they all seem to be 2 handed maces that are built for hybrids. There are a few armor pieces and those are easier to distribute. With any loot priority system you will hurt feelings. Ofcourse if people want the raid to succeed then they will have to get over it.

Yeah, we've ran into those issues. A priority system with loose class restriction favors hybrid classes as they can roll on everything, while tight class restriction favors specialized classes. Take your pick, I'll take the one that increases the raid's success.
Also keep in mind that there will be exceptions based on the availability of loot for a given class/slot. For instance, taken out of context the Staff of Rampant Growth looks like it should be equal priority for Priests and Druids. But with how easy it is for a Priest to get Benediction and the utter lack of a good healing staff that a Druid can pick up (ah..will of arlokk?), Rampant Growth should clearly be going to Druids. Now a good priest wouldn't think of rolling on it even if it was allowed and they didn't yet have Benediction, but it's good to codify it in writing anyway.

yes always get all decisions in writing, I detest the "you never told us that" statement. No matter what someone will be dissapointed but if you prepare them in advance then the blow will be less. Also killing new bosses always seems to take the sting out of things.

Also, as more powerful loot begins to emerge, you can start being more lenient on class priorities. Shadow Wing Focus Staff was completely Mage/Warlock priority till we found out Staff of Shadow Flame existed, so then Druids were given shared priority.

We assign class priority to items at the same time we assign points. It's important to have them worked out beforehand, as much as possible, to avoid loot arguments during raids.
To correctly do it, you have to ask yourself not only, "what class is bast for each item," but, "what items are best for each class." You want to distribute items roughly evenly (ideally) amongst classes, and you'd rather not deny any class an item which is arguably the best for them in a particular slot.
You also have to consider in the environment in which the items are embedded, and try to items in the weakest places. For example, Benediction is essentially a class feature for Priests, which weakens their case for weapons for a little while.
The primary purpose of priorities is to eliminate situations (which will arise all the time with free-from RP, and especially with auction DKP), where 2 people have 2 items, and both would be happier if they were reversed.
Actually, I just realized (for any mathematicians in the crowd), what we're talking about here is the "Marriage Problem." Nifty.

Guys this is an easy question to answer, from first priority on all items to last:
Warriors
Hunters
Mages
Warlocks
Priests
Rogues
Shaman
Then items are defaulted to druids, except for that leather stuff with int and strength which Bad and Smanacraft get.
