Yeah, I was going to say something similar, but you beat me to it. The idea that a so-called "technical writer and publisher of novels" would hold that misguided and ill-considered tome of self-contradictory tripe in any kind of high esteem is shocking to the point of being a little disturbing. For a further dissection of the decades of harm that Strunk and White have inflicted upon the English language, I found this article to be quite an amusing read.

Edit: Oh, heh, I totally didn't realise you'd already linked that. You're right, the links really are almost impossible to spot.

For those unfamiliar with The Elements of Style, it is the real-life version of the Necronomicon except instead of being a forbidden book it's a book we force our school children to study. The prescriptivist poppycock contained within has ruined thousands of writers and damaged millions more. I escaped with only a mild maiming thanks to my endless disrespect for authoritah. Prof. Geoff Nunberg had this to say about the value and danger of our stereotypical strict high school grammar teacher,

"[W]ho with withering sarcasm dismisses all the [errors] in her students' papers ... you have to have a teacher like that. The trouble is a lot of people kind of never get over that moment. They're the people who write comments on any blog entry or newspaper article that involves grammar, going on sarcastically about someone else's use of language. The sarcasm is something they learn in seventh grade and never overcome. It's what's wrong with the way people think about language.

I feel really bad for Professional Writer Nytkin's professional editor. I can really picture him wading through ad hominem attacks and minor grammar corrections every time he makes a suggestion to her. I'd kind of like to be able to show him this thread. I can only imagine the daily threats of Mutually Assured Drama he must get when trying to correct her writings. I cracked up when I saw her exult in her ability to "come across at least as half as clear as many EJ posters" -- I'm sure her editor just adores that as a personal standard of quality. "Here at WidgetCo, our products are almost of median quality."

If next month's Banhammer Extravaganza is another woman, I'm calling Gloria Allred on your asses.

I go to the threads relating to my characters maybe once or twice a week. I read the Banhammer daily. The mods' responses to the infracted posts are by far the most entertaining thing on the site. And threads like this make my week, never mind my day.
