As for guild policy, I would have to point to the latter 'common sense' policy for the most part.

We have had very, very few circumstances where people were playing other characters for loot and then if that happens there is generally a good reason for it. I should plead guilty on this, because the night the second binding dropped for my Thunderfury I had someone else on my account for Garr, having been held up at work. After running MC for ~7 months for it, I don't feel too bad :o. In general though, given the size of our guild there are generally always people to fill in so loot doesn't rot which makes 'botting' characters rather unnecessary.

We recently had someone drama quit during a raid for a combination of personal and loot reasons, and the next day one of the officers invited them back to the guild. Nothing happened to the individual in terms of a measured response, because we hadn't addressed/considered this scenerio prior to the incident. Some people think applying a penalty now after the fact, without posting the policy ahead of time, isn't 'fair'. How would you have handled this situation?

Also, under what circumstances do you think it's ok for characters to be botted for an encounter? We've allowed it for the second Binding of the Windseeker and the Eye of Sulfuras, and when stuff is going to get disenchanted that a west coaster could use (and would never see due to raid start time conflicts). Is anything beyond that generally acceptable by other top-end guilds?
We dont have bots.

And as for your first question/statement, thats pretty much how it goes. I'm not going to sit down and write out a 50 page charter and think of everything that could ever possibly happen.

If some drama happens over something and we (officer/guild as a whole) decide PMS/AQ Sand in the private bits wasnt the overall cause of the drama, we will usually make a rule directly relating to it and any other similar scenario we can think of at the time. Until then common sense pretty much wins the day.

It's unrealistic to come up with a policy for everything ahead of time. For the most part, we have vague guidelines and principles by which all members are expected to abide. When a specific incident comes up, that serves as the basis for an objective rule covering that situation from that point onward. So, say, the first time someone wanted to change mains, we had to sit down and say, "Well hrm, how is this going to work?" and set guidelines.

As to your last question, what do you mean by "botting?" Do you mean having someone else play the character? Sure, we do that a bit when needed -- usually to make sure that loot doesn't rot, as you noted (as noted, Bindings being a prime example -- if Garr dropped his Bindings when none of our guys with Geddon bindings were in the raid, I'd cry). People who aren't played by their actual owner have absolute last priority on drops, however, but it certainly happens. When we do Rag these days, for example, only a tiny handful of mains still need t2 pants, so I try to encourage those who can't make it to the kill to give their info to someone who can log them on just for Rag, so that we have the lowest possible odds of having to waste t2 pants drops.

Well as for guild policy I personally like leaving it wide open. You can have 2 almost identical situations that should be handled differently and if you have 1 set rule that is ironclad then well you can have situations. Also if you have little rules for everything well invariably you will leave something out and someone will use that to their advantage. The "I leave it open to change the rules to better the raid" rule works well but ofcourse that can be abused so it is up to the GM or RL to decide whether your group of raiders can handle it.

One thing of importance is consistency though. Which sounds odd with my first statement but you need to be consistent in how you judge each situation. If people never know how you are going to react to something that will produce mistrust and eventually people wont believe any of your actions.

As to botting. It is fine as long as it isnt abused imo. If I have other raiders that can come I will take them but stuff like bindings I will usually have the person botted through if they cant make it. Luckily I only have 1 person waiting for a binding and I cant think of the last time he missed a raid.

We bot for Garr, Domo and Onyxia, if people need the bindings or priest/hunter quest items, respectively.

Other than that, we stick to "play your main".

What percentage of guilds would you say conduct interviews over vent to assess maturity, attitude and intelligence?

This is good advice. As I was preparing for an interview about 10 days ago, I decided to be more upbeat than my usually serious self. The recruiter I was working with indicated managers associate enthusiasm with trainability.

So I went into the interview with Digo's advice in my head. And the interview went well.

I start the job Monday.

Alliance side maybe, try living the life of the horde :)

Eh, you guys just eat your own children instead. Which alliance has been doing lately too; I'm not the only one to have jumped from one endgame guild to another, I just had the best reason for it.
