Thanks to Boethius for the permission to post this!

You are invited to participate in a survey done by Jan Derk Wolters at the Radboud University Nijmegen (NL), under supervision of dr. C.P.M. van Halen. The goal of this survey is to evaluate the importance of different areas of life to players of online role-playing games (MMORPGs). Filling in this survey will take 10 to 15 minutes.

You can find the survey at the following web address

http://www.socsci.ru.nl/surveys/pieter/mmorpg.htm

All questions and comments should be directed to j.d.wolters@student.ru.nl

Results will be published on a website. The URL will be presented at the end of the survey.

I would like to thank you for your participation,

Jan Derk Wolters

ok the problem with that survey was that you make me think there are only 3 questions left and then you toss in those last 3 parts. Oh well hope it helped out some. I do hope that you arent just going to high end gaming guilds since that will skew your results greatly.

Either i don't understand something, or there is dublicate questions in multiply choices part. I.e. whats the difference between "Online role-playing gives me self-confidence." and "Because of my experiences with online role-playing, I feel confident about myself." ?

Interesting survey. I actually had to do some double takes on questions about how MMO's affect my real life. I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

More importantly, how badass is it to have a professor named Van Halen?

usually in surveys measuring personality or how you do stuff you ask the same question different ways to see if you get different answers.

It seems pretty obvious where they are going with the last few sets of questions.. they are going to try and draw some conclusions based on how you answered the questions on your work vs. your best friend vs. your game playing.

I wouldn't imagine it'll be a positive conclusion, either. Also the "results" page has nothing on it as of now.

I took a big survey for some college class, but I didn't like the results so I just made them up.

Yes, but usually dublicate questions are spread amongst entire lenght of survey to make it work. Putting dublicate questions within several rows of each other - weird.

Well, I will reply to your questions when the survey goes offline. That will be in roughly a week, so you will have to be a little patient. ;)

Filled it out because you actually asked for permission before you posted it, rather than just going "hay guyz do this" =p Didn't realize how much a week I actually played before I had to sit down and think about it, heh. Kinda sad ;x

"He/She gives me faith."

Faith in what? Religious faith? Faith in myself? Faith in him/her?

Also, "Because of him/her I feel confident about myself." - Why is there no question asking whether you feel confident about yourself notwithstanding this other person (and notwithstanding games)? Is self-reliance really that outmoded? Same question re: a bunch of the questions on those page, I love my friends but feel pretty secure about life even when they're away. Marked neutral on all those questions, anyway.

But yeah, the phrasing on this stuff irritated me quite a bit - I wouldn't say anything in my life is particularly responsible for giving me self-confidence, faith, etc. It's just life as a whole. I don't like that disagreeing with the fact that MMOs 'give me security in life' could so easily be spun as MMOs not having value in life, simply by omitting that equivalent answers were given on the other aspects. Or that MMO players don't have faith or self-confidence just because i can't agree that any single aspect of my life gives me those things. Bleh.

Yeah, this is common. In psychological testing you'll see the same questions asked 3-4 times in different ways. It insures a certain level of truth, (though it's just silly in a 10 question chunk). After the first 100 of 600 questions you stop really paying attention and just answer off the top of your head, which is usually the truth.
