You nailed it - it's because there's less of a dissonance to play something completely imaginary than something real. Something you have a lot of real experience with, which has left you with expectations and stereotypes.
When I play a female character I always get uncomfortable about the time I start to actually get to know people. They know I'm not a girl and I feel like I'm misrepresenting myself. There's no confusion as to whether I'm a troll.
Anyhow, I'd like to say I chose a troll because I like their attitude and culture (and the metaculture of people who play trolls, master race, etc). But honestly I think those are things I've come to appreciate, and I really chose them because I liked the character models better and because I thought health regen would cut my downtime. Pretty much blew that one, but fortunately I got lucky and now berserk is a nice ability for rogues.
I do wish BC would introduce chiropractors and maybe I could stand up straight for once.
