Except for the fact that any reasonable guild would boot a hunter who used Serpent Sting on a raid mob. It would increase his personal DPS, not raid DPS. Considering the insane mana regen our priests have these days I'd rather see a SW:P up there.

(OK, I might be exaggerating. It might just be my guild that /gkicks Hunters who use serpent sting on raid mobs.)

In addition, it seems to have a very low priority, thus getting knocked off after a couple of seconds max.
In one of our Patchwerk kills, I misclicked a button, and fired a Serpent Sting instead of... activating Rapid Fire (or something similarily random).
A breakdown of damage dealt after the combat showed me, in total for the whole fight, having Serpent Sting damage dealt equal to...
1 tick

As a hunter (and now as a priest, for that matter) I found it incredibly valuable to have herbalism as a trade skill; they're definitely one of the more pot-intensive classes in end-game raiding, so being able to farm your own major mana / mageblood / mongoose pots is a huge help. With a bit of time spent farming herbs the costs you mention of using said consumables drops dramatically.

As an aside, for longer fights like Patchwerk it's probably worthwhile dumping a bit of cash into brilliant mana oils rather than lessers, it's a fairly decent boost in regeneration, though possibly not necessary for alliance hunters.
