There really has not been enough praise of the Trappist beers. I only have access to the Rochefort 6, 8 and 10, but they are pretty wonderful. They certainly get the job done quicker than other beers, too.
If you're in or around the New Jersey/Pennsylvania border or surrounding areas, look for Riverhorse. It's a microbrew out of Lambertsville, NJ near New Hope, PA, with a fairly large distribution range. Their Irish lager is especially great.

I tried that sam adams cherry wheat the other day, I thought it was good, but a bit syrupy for me (though I'm not a big fan of cherries to start with). Next time I hit up a beer store I want to try and pickup a lambic or two and see how they compare, or maybe that Saison from Ommegang.
|
Give Lindemans Framboise Lambic a try, generally not my thing, but all the flavors I've tried of theirs are quite good.
edit: cheer for redundancy

I'll be alright when we get to pass out time.

My birthday is coming up in a few days and we'd planned on trying a few lambics to honor the occasion.

Boulevard Wheat was one of my best standby beers before I moved to Colorado. However, their distribution hasn't quite made it from Kansas City yet.
http://www.blvdbeer.com/
However, after the move, I have found plenty of new local micro brews to try.
1) As mentioned before numerous times Fat Tire is excellent, but being a wheat beer lover, Sunshine Wheat (another new belgium brew) direct from the brewery is quite delicious.
http://www.newbelgium.com/
2) I'm more partial to the Odell's lineup. Odell's is yet another Fort Collins brewery. (90 Shilling/Easy Street Wheat/Double Pilsner) but you can't really get that outside of a couple state area around Colorado.
http://www.odellbrewing.com/
My general rule is that the quality/taste of the beer is inversely proportional to the size of the brewery and the distance you live from said brewery. That being said, there are exceptions to the rule and some bigger breweries do produce some decent drinks.

Me or the beer?
Ah, it doesn't matter. Sweet on both counts.

I almost bought some recently but we went with Pyramid Hefe Weizen instead. (The latter is my wife's favorite.) Now I *have* to try it.

Are you a partial to filtered or unfiltered wheat? I'm actually more of a hefe fan but sunshine is my favorite filtered wheat beer.

Oh durn it. If it's filtered, I'll probably just leave it alone. My wife and I both have really taken to unfiltered wheat beer. We like the taste and I use its protein content to justify my drinking.

Another bump for Newcastle.
And until I saw the post towards the top of this page (235), I didn't realize that Boulevard Wheat was only around such a small area. Definately a good wheat.

Go away, you filthy sake-drinking strumpet!
Lambics are good, though I agree they're not something to drink in mass quantities. The best thing about them is how well they age. A family friend brought me a bottle of lambic they'd had in their house collecting dust for at least ten years. It was amazing.
As for Trappist beers, Chimay will always be the king of those to me. All Trappist products are drinkable, but Chimay Gran Cru was my first taste of monky deliciousness and I'll always have a fondness for it.

Pretty sure that Boulevard just lost the ability to be called a microbrewery within the last year or so due to their size. I guess there are regulations about such things. At least that's what I was told... Could have been false.
Yea as far as unfiltered wheat, boulevard and easy street are both excellent. But you aren't going to be finding either outside of the midwest/colorado region.
--------
Also just remembered a really good stout I had while in Minneapolis.
Bell's Java Stout
http://www.bellsbeer.com/branddetail.asp?BrandID=15
The satisfying elements of both stout and coffee come together in this full-bodied treat. A marriage of Sumatra's best with rich chocolate and roasted malt provides for a truly enlightening beer
yummy

Boulevard is classified as a regional brewery. Not sure where I read that, but I do recall seeing it at some point in the last year or so.
Someone needs to make us a beer dps spreadsheet with the beer name, the number of recommendations (maybe how recommended it) and a brief description of it. I need a cheat sheet next time I go to the wine and beer center that has the stuff listed in the thread.

A friend and I got bored at the grocery store the one day and decided to try out some stuff. Of the random beer we grabbed that we had never heard of before, UFO ( http://www.harpoonbrewery.com/index.cfm?pid=28519) ended up being the best.
Its an unfiltered wheat beer... the only one I've ever had so I can't really compare it to other unfiltered wheat beers, but compared to most beer that I've had it was definately good enough to warrent another purchase.
