Cases of beer left at landfill too hard to resist - All Salon - Salon.com
Discarded beer causes stir | ColumbiaTribune.com
A Columbia distributor, Scheppers Distributing Co., sent 1,500 cases of expired beer to the landfill on April 1 in two shipments. The first shipment was destroyed immediately, but the second, containing about 700 cases of Budweiser and Michelob Ultra, was not.
Margrace Buckler, the city's human resource director, said two Solid Waste Division workers, who haven't been identified, brought a city pickup truck to the landfill and hauled off about 50 cases of the beer.
When the sanitation workers were confronted on Monday, one quit, the Columbia Tribune reported. The other could face disciplinary action.

"Real men of genius"
Hardly worth firing in the grand scheme of things. My fiance used to work for a city water department in the Boston area. Some "good old boys" who had been in city government forever used to fuck off in a city truck all day and no one knew or cared what they were doing. Cops randomly pulled them over one day and it turned out they'd been dealing cocaine out of city trucks for decades . The fact that they were on the water department payroll as "distribution department" was like 10 years of Christmas in one day for newspaper editors.

Regarding Sierra Nevada Glissade: enjoyable bock. Not exactly the type of thing I could see myself drinking a ton of, but a decent summer beer. Also tried Brew Dog's Bashah this afternoon which they describe as a "Black Belgian Style Double India Pale Ale." Definitely interesting, but not nearly hoppy enough for me to call it an IPA. It was very dark and stout-ish, but the level of hops reminded me a bit more of an American pale ale. Not interesting enough for me to want to pay the price for an imported bottle more than once.
Around Ohio, Columbus Brewing Company puts out a very, very nice summer IPA called Summerteeth I recommend to anyone that can get their hands on it. It's unfiltered and gleefully hoppy without being too overbearing.

Got to try Ballast Point's limited edition Sculpin IPA last night. I really enjoyed this one, as it was really on the citrus side of the the IPA spectrum. Was much better then their normal IPA too. This would be a perfect summer IPA, with the exception of it being a limited release, and a bit pricey.

Had Sculpin IPA on tap last night; I usually never call an IPA smooth, but this was. It didn't have the intensely bitter hoppiness, and that's not really a bad thing.
I also had Lost Abbey's Angel's Share. 12%, dark... it was like bourbon wrapped in chocolate. It was a little tough to drink at first, especially after the Sculpin, but it warmed up and was fantastic.

50 Best Beers To Try Now: GQ
Looks like my local pub has about 10 of these available. Should be fun to work through the list.

I've had more of those than I expected. wtf at a few of them, though (Hennepin?)
In other news, RFD in Chinatown DC had Gnarlywine (Languinitas barleywine) on tap recently. It's so good.

Totally at random last week I picked up Route d'Epices on that list. Holy hell was it peppery in the finish. Absolutely unique and amazing. Jack D'or was overrated, as are most of the stuff Pretty Things puts out, their St. Botolph's excepted. I was surprised to only have drank 30 of those though. There's something about the Michigan and Midwest breweries that they don't really distribute out to the northeast, not to mention how hard it is to get Russian River stuff.

This is pretty local info, but anyway... went to the Oskar Blues brew pub outside of Boulder today. In addition to their more widely distributed brews they had a couple small batches on tap. A coffee porter called Colombian Extremo was, well, extreme. It was almost 7% ABV yet tasted exactly like a glass of ice coffee. I honestly wouldn't have known it was a beer if you set it in front of me. It was interesting but a pint was too much, it took me almost an hour to drink the damn thing and I love both coffee and beer. I'd have preferred a half serving at half the price.
They also had Pond Scum which was allegedly an "American take on a classic English bitter". As far as I could tell it was just an American pale ale. Not bad, but nothing about it made me think English Bitter.

Not sure if anyone else has found it in stores yet but out here in NY we just got some of Sierra Nevada's 30th anniversary ale. It's a pretty heavy stout that pours with a rather significant head. It's not the most amazing stout I've had but it was certainly tasty none the less.
I also noticed Rogue has a double version of their mocha porter that just showed up recently. I'm probably going to grab a bottle of it this weekend anyone else run into it find it any good?

Yeah grabbed one of the Sierra Nevada 30th's this past week, I was at the nice Whole Foods on Houston, the one where you can get growlers, and noticed it. Have not tried it yet. Speaking of which, if you are in the NY area and can swing by there, get a growler of the Dead Guy Jack Jack, it is a very nice variation on the standard Rogue Dead Guy.
Had that Mocha Porter before. It was decent, not too spectacular though. Rogue's stuff is like that, I either really like it or it is a bit meh.

Malan, that list was missing one of the best beers I have ever found. I was in the Army for 9 years, and found myself in Augsburg in 1991-1994. They didn't specify brewery when you ordered a beer there, you'd just order a helles (golden, i.e a lager) or a hefe-weisen. I fell in love with the hefe-weisen style they perfected there, and brag it up whereever I go. Since I returned to the US, I've sampled every wheat beer I could get my hands on, and have found that Ayinger Brau Weisse (their hefe-weisen) is as close as you can get to an authentic Bavarian hefe-weisen in the average US market (if you can find better, I will pay to travel to drink it as I have sampled every beer in Austin).

Seconding the Route d'Epices, really unusual but delicious. The pepper is unmistakable. The same night I also tried Dieu du Ciel's Corne du Diable, which I'd also strongly recommend. It's a reddish and nicely balanced IPA, very tasty.

I've been to that Oskar Blues many times, and I completely agree with your assessment of the Pond Scum. It's good for a Pale Ale, in that it's not too "floral", but it's not a great ESB.
Avery Brewery's 14'er ESB, by contrast, is a much better local example. Though really, if you like hops, anything at Avery's tap room is excellent--though I have to admit I go to Avery's tap room about three or four times a week. Nonetheless, the 14'er is probably Avery's best commonly-seen bottled beers. The Out of Bounds Stout is also good in bottles, but it's exceptional on tap. And even better cask-conditioned.
If you're looking for Coffee + Beer combinations, Avery's tap room in Boulder (as of yesterday), still had a tap of "Out of Sight", an Out of Bounds stout infused with Coffee beans from the local roaster "the Unseen Bean". Much more balanced of a Coffee Stout, in my mind.

I picked up a pack of the Rogue Dead Guy Ale last night. Seemed a decent beer, malty, very little head, didn't come across with any particular flavors that made it memorable though. Nothing unpleasant about it, but I'm not sure how that got on GQs list of the 50 best beers.
