Sam Adams is quite nice actually, but Hoegaarden is really where it's at. When I was holidaying in France recently, I was buying the stuff at about 2 euro (3.2 AUD) per 1L bottle. Come back to Australia, and it's about 4x that price. Someone in France could make a killing CoDing this stuff to me.

So, is the server broken for you guys too?
PS: Brooklyn Brewery is amazing. Magic Hat is worth checking out if you're in the New England area.

I'm pretty sure that Guinness has fewer calories than most beers. It has a lower alcohol content, which is why. I recall the figure being about half yours: 250ish per pint. I'll look it up when I get a chance.

Magic Hat is *worth checking out*. But only if you're buying it from a trusted liquor store or bar. If it's not kept cool during storage, it loses a LOT more than most other beers.

That's correct.

I'm not sure if any of you have tried Tiger Beer but that's a perennial favorite in Singapore. It's cheap but I prefer Guinness and Heineken to it.

Guinness is no more fattening or calorific than any other beer of similar alcoholic strength. The beer has no fat, however it does contain protein, sugar, carbohydrates and alcohol. The alcohol accounts for 65-75% of the calorific content irrespective of the beer in question. Per pint, Draught Guinness has 210 calories; as a reference, one pint of semi-skimmed milk has 260 calories and one pint of orange juice has 220 calories. Draught Guinness actually has fewer calories than most other premium beers and lagers.
|
Found it on the interweb, so it must be true! Makes sense though. I think the thing is just so damn thick it feels like a meal.

I liked Heineken for the longest time, but I started to notice that it always gave me a headache after 1 or 2; I don't really have that problem with lagers though, so I made the switch.

This is a pretty decent resource: http://www.theraven.com/beer.html .
Speaking of Guinness though, I learned the hard way not to order a carbomb in an irish pub.

I favor ales and stouts over lagers, even Stella didn't impress me all that much.
Guinness, mmm. I like trying other stouts but Guinness is popular for a reason methinks.
Sam Adams Cherry Wheat is good stuff. Couldn't find it for about 5 years here in Vegas but the liquor store down the street started selling it again, I'm a happy man. Too sweet to drink all the time but its a nice change from the heavier stuff.
I keep going back to Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, its a touch bitter but oh so drinkable.
And how about Chimay Blue? Heavenly stuff.

Ugh beer. You guys need some nice sweet Riesling like Kurt Hain or an Unoaked Chardonnay like Wishing Tree (mmmmm).
Or a lovely White Sangria. Delicious.

You guys should try some Belgian trappist ales:

Chimay is one of my favorites, I have fond memories of consuming several bottles and being utterly lost in my own drunkeness.

I have to agree here, I have yet to find a beer that doesn't taste like drinking compost. If you like sweet white wines, I have to recommend a Moscato D'Asti. Get a lighter one (some of the heavier ones are quite syrupy)
My absolute favorite is the Nivole (Michele Chiarlo) http://www.kobrandwine.com/prodbook/mic006.html
(google it, you can probably find a few stores, although it's quite popular so you may find it at the local (upmarket) grocery store).

If you're in the north east, give Rare Vos by Ommegang a try. A Belgian Ale with heavy fruit and yeast tastes. Oh, and it's 8.5%!

If you enjoy sweeter beers I would definitely sugget Pete's Wicked Ale Strawberry Blonde. I believe it's only a summer time brew but the taste is damned unique despite having one of the most emasculating names for a beer in the history of man. As to the foreign beer markets, I'd say Pilsner Urquell is my all-time favorite dinner beer with Stella Artois as a close second. There was a Hungarian (maybe Czech) beer I tried in a bar a year or two ago that was hovering around 10ish % alcohol and actually maintained a pretty decent taste, I think it had Honey in the name, or some slavic spelling of the word Honey. Either way it was damn good and damn potent.

No west coasters? Sierra Nevada is great!
And for the Cherry Brew people...
<Dennis Leary> Let me tell you something folks, cranberries and beer do not go togeather. One's for bladder infections, one's for getting fucking drunk. I'm 40. I don't need to be standing in my kitchen tasting cranberry fucking nutcrunch ale while the hocky playoffs are on.</Dennis Leary>
