Funny you mention Old Style. I was listening to a Cubs vs. Giants game and there was this great commercial for Old Style where this comedian kept using Old Style as his punchline. Can't think of the guys name, but if you do let me know.
Anyone tried Fat Tire? Great microbrew and the tradition is, if you work for the company for more than a year, they present you with a fat tire beach cruiser bike.

2 of my canadian friends actually took me up on it and spent 3 nights in their tent in my backyard, it was great :p

Ya, if you work at new belgium for 5 years they also send you to belgium to do a bike ride/beer drinking extravaganza. Lived about a mile from it for 6 years before I moved cross country.
They have quite a few very good beers. Blue paddle, abbey, trippel.
Fort Collins CO, in general has a fairly amazing selection of beers with the new belgium, odell's and fort collins brewary all operating there. One notable you might have seen more recently is the fcb chocolate stout.

I'll be alright when we get to pass out time.

Live in Chicago, and I prefer Pabst.
When I want to pay money for beer, I'm always good with Bell's (Oberon is an excellent wheat, and Stout is a -surprise- stout. Some of their others are not as good, and I can't stand their porter.)
On the Belgian trappist subject, the Unibraue brewery makes some very good ones. Look for ridiculous label art - Don De Dieu and Trois Pistoles are my favorites, but Fin Du Monde is also solid. The apple one is trash, though.
|
Melador> Incidentally, these last few pages are why people hate lawyers.
Viator> I really don't want to go all Kalman here.
Bury> Just imagine what the world would be like if you used your powers for good.
Clearly law school has done wonders for me.

I just moved to the East Coast and tried Yuengling for the first time. Good stuff, but I really liked thier Black & Tan too.
As a Colorado native, Fat Tire is a favorite. But living out here I can never seem to find any on draft :(
On the subject of cheap beer. If you have ever been to Okinawa, you know Orion. It can be dirt cheap (although most booze there is) and isnt too bad. Thin taste IMO.

My father and grandfather (and current girlfriend) all drink guiness.
The basic idea is that it has to be fresh and through clean pipes. If you go somewhere where they hardly sell guiness it sits in the pipes and goes off, you want somewhere that sells alot of guiness and changes their pipes regularly.

i just wanted to note that steel reserve does in fact come in cans and in 30 racks at the same potency as the 40 oz. Making this the best thing evar for college students. At $12.50 for 30...

I hope you're joking. Steel Reserve is among the top 5 worst beers I've ever drank, and that's saying something.
Yuengling Lager however, is a godsend to all PA-based college students.

Same for any beer really. I've had some truly awful pints thanks to the beer I chose not being very popular in that establishment.

I'll have to keep an eye out for Kelham, I'm heading up that way for my cousin's wedding in a few weeks (My Dad's side of the family are all from Yorkshire).
Overall this thread seems like it has a lot of information about good beers - I think I might have to start making notes.

After checking the website, it looks like it was Cherry Wheat. At least now I won't sound like a retard when I go into the store asking if they have it.

Our resident Brits could give you a better answer of course, but I've always preferred Boddington's (which is, in actuality, English) to Guinness.
|
I just tried some Boddington's tonight at an American bar (Brickskeller in DC, fantastic place if you like your beers) after reading this recommendation; while it's probably not quite the same as what you'd get in a legitimate English pub, I'd have to second Praetorian's suggestion.

I really enjoy the Trappist Ales (Chimay, Duvel, etc) and Delerium Tremens is delicious.
One thing I've been happy to notice over the past few years at the bars in/around D.C. is that the selection of beer has expanded... more places are serving more than just your standard miller/bud/coors.
and the Brickskellar is <3

I love that place. I used to live in the northern Virginia area outside DC, and we would frequent the Brickskellar on weekends.
The selection there is unrivaled. We would get sauced there before heading to the 9:30 club or the Bayou , and other georgetown stops. Fond memories.

Boddington's is good, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned (or I missed when I skimmed through the thread last night) Newcastle. It's damn hard to beat a good Newcastle on tap or bottled.

anything that comes in a green or clear bottle should not be trusted, imo, because it shows that the brewer doesn't give a shit if your beer gets lightstruck. They do it because green and clear glass are cheaper. Why do you think corona tastes like piss until you put a lime in?

good dessert beer: mix Lindeman's Framboise (raspberry-flavored) with Young's Chocolate Stout in even proportions, similar to how you'd mix a Black and Tan. The bar across from my old apartment has both of these on draft and it's pretty damn good.

Yuengling's Traditional Lager. Brewed, with distinction, in America's Oldest Brewery (tm) located in the heart of Pottsville, PA
|
Yuengling is pretty much the only perk of living right outside of Pottsville. That being said I find myself getting sick of Lager after a while and have to switch to either the Black&Tan or to their Chesterfield Ale (while not being the best ale I have ever had it is one of your "better bangs for your buck").

That's where I live.
There's a boozer called the Market Porter that's just round the corner - it opens up at 6.30 am so that all the market stall operators could have a beer after the markets closed (they were open from like 4 or something).
Weird fact #1 - despite living in the UK I don't rate British beer much at all apart from IPA - I'd rather have a good German or Czech Pilsener anyday.
Great derail though....

Being I'm a Pennsylvanian from State College, PA (now living in California) I went home back in July to go to the State College Brew Expo ( http://www.scbrewexpo.com/ ).
I would suggest it to anyone to make the trip if you can. One of the best shows I have been to and plenty of great brewerys represented.
Anyone have any other great brew expos or shows that they have been to? Looking to try and compile a list of shows in states (and countries for that matter) to check out as I seem to be moving every three years for my job.
BTW this post delivers! (so cliche, but had to be said)
