I hope you're joking. Steel Reserve is among the top 5 worst beers I've ever drank, and that's saying something.
Yuengling Lager however, is a godsend to all PA-based college students.
|
I just found a bar about 2 weeks ago that has yuengling and dos equis for $2.00 pints on tuesdays. It makes wednesday feel like shit, until I look in my wallet and realize I got wasted for under $30.00. That said, as much as the beer selection blows for living in a smaller southern town, I do love the fact that there are 3 different bars with 2.50 liquor drinks (all on different nights). So while tuition at wake is a bitch, drinking with townies is not.

Dechutes Black Butte Porter -- on the light side for a porter.
Stone Brewery Arrogant Bastard Ale -- the name is enough, but it's also a great beer. "This is an aggressive beer. You probably won't like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory -- maybe something with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it's made in a little brewery, or one that implies their tasteless fizzy yellow beer will give you more sex appeal. Peraps you think multi-million dollar ad campaigns make a beer tates better. Perhaps you're mouthing your words as you read this."
(edit) Almost forgot "Maudite" ("the damned one") if you like belgian-style ales, and Steam Train Porter -- great beer, but good luck finding it, it's even hard up here near the brewery (I haven't had any of their other beers.)
If you like Fat Tire, definitely try some of New Belgium's other beers -- I like them a lot better. 1554 and their Trippel being my two favorites.
A local restaurant up here runs "Brewmaster's Dinners" where they bring in a microbrew and they work with the chef to match the beer with the food. It's been great to taste some of the brewery's less well-known beers (my comment to the New Belgium brewmaster was "Don't take this the wrong way, but Fat Tire was the least impressive beer you brought." He said "Yup, it is -- we agree. But it sells well...")

I'm quite partial to John Smith's (plus their adverts are awesome) but I had a pint of Adnam's today and it wasn't too bad. Newcastle Brown isn't bad either (I'm going up north in October for Uni). I've also discovered that cheap French beer from Tesco tastes like piss.

You guys have good taste in beer, but it also means I've got basically nothing to contribute beyond recommending The Publick House in Brookline as basically the best place to get good beer in Boston. They don't mess around with anything else, and they've got a huge array of delicious beer on tap.

You live in Boston? Just to go out on a limb, since you've mentioned you're a programmer and I think I recall you saying something about Scheme at one point, are you a current/former MIT student?

Yuengling is pretty much the only perk of living right outside of Pottsville. That being said I find myself getting sick of Lager after a while and have to switch to either the Black&Tan or to their Chesterfield Ale (while not being the best ale I have ever had it is one of your "better bangs for your buck").
|
As a college student my taste in beer is largely limited by certain mitigating factors, but attending university in Pennsylvania has one big thing going for it: Yuengling Lager. The semester begins in a week and I'm looking forward to drinking one of the best beers for my buck again.

Is Hoegaarden the white beer? I went thru ALOT of different kinds of beers when my brother come down from Norway awhile back, and I remember having a white beer that had a name similar to Hoegaarden. I really really should have taken notes from which ones were good, and which werent. Forgot most of the names after 3 weeks of drinking :(
I've had a likeing to Haagen and Grolsch since then tho.
Dont take my word as an expert tho. When I first moved to Australia I used to drink Emu Export ALL the time...

I had an Econ professor that who used to laugh at the economic trend of Frat Parties by what beer kegs and boxes were outside the frat house.
He knew when dues were collected by the Corona boxes and Yuengling kegs in the trash and the party towards the end of the month had Milwakees Best and IC Light cans sitting along the curb

Pyramid's not bad at all; one of my standbys. Never really realised it was "west coast", I seem to be somewhat spoiled out here.
I'm liking Full Sail's Trippel right now, quite good for a non-Belgian attempt at the brew, though a bit sweet for mass consumption. (As I think has been mentioned a few pages up.) I much prefer Leffe Trippel, for instance, as it's a good bit dryer to me. (Though it will put you on your knees--if you can find them--faster than anything beer-shaped I've ever seen. The Belgians do NOT screw around with their beer.)
Red Stripe's also getting some attention. Yeah, it's mass-market megabrew, but the commercials rule, and it goes great with a nice spicy meal.

Next to the monkeys with the laser pointers, the "You are very ugly!" is my favorite TV commercial.

I haven't seen Blue Moon mentioned. It's excellent. It's a Belgian White and while I haven't had Hoegaarden, it's supposed to be similar. (It's owned by Coors, but brewed in Memphis at a brewery that Coors purchased.)
If you're in the Midwest, try a Boulevard. It's a regional brewery in Kansas City that makes a damn fine unfiltered wheat year round a summer Belgian White called Zon.

This is an excellent thread :)
I went to school in Colorado so Fat Tire is a favorite. Then I moved out to IL and now I can't find it so I'm in beer limbo at the moment.
Favorite beer of all time is Tusker (made in Kenya and sold in 500ml bottles) If you ever have the chance.. dont pass it up. You can get it in select stores in DC, NY and Chicago. Probably many other places but those are the few I have actively searched and ended up pleasantly surprised :)
P.S
Sorry about your guild bank being banned... pm your address and I'll send you some Tusker to help ease the suffering.

at the risk of being banned (from this thread, at least!), i must confess that i'm not much of a beer drinker. i went through college living in my fraternity house occasionally having a corona, but mostly subsisted on mixed drinks and hard liquor. oddly i've come to appreciate a few more beers since leaving college, but generally speaking i'm a vodka/margarita/etc man :-P

Lately I've been consuming large amounts of Copperberg - Pear, and I've grown so used to it that I can't drink much else if a pub/club don't have it.

It's almost impossible to find good cider in the states, sadly. I love Strongbow because it has a lot of fond memories and is pleasant, but I don't have any illusions about it being anything other than mass-market. Most of the other ciders are pretty painfully bad(Magners, Cider Jack, etc), though occasionally Woodchuck can be ok.

If you are drinking beer as part of a culinary experience I have to recommend yet another Belgium beer, Lambik (sp) which is, of course, a lambic beer. I have seen sour cherry (kriek), raspberry (framboise), peach (pêche), and strawberry (aardbei) flavors, there may be others. It comes it what looks like a wine bottle, and it is corked, but it is beer.
Not something you want to bring to your buddies for football.
I always bust it out the first time I have a date over and I make dinner. Try this trick for your girlfriend, wife, date, etc., buy a bottle of cheaper champagne (I prefer Cava) and mix it 50/50 with the Lambik flavor of your choice and serve it in a champagne glass. It is visually stunning, and the thick aroma of the fruit is intoxicating. Serve with an equally impressive meal that compliments the fruity flavor. Plus it is two bottles of booze and should give you both a nice little buzz. It also serves as a good litmus test for the potential of the relationship, for if the girl is not impressed, I dump her ASAP.

I am not sure what part of IL you are in, but in Chicago, Fat Tire has made one of the biggest pushes into the Chicago beer market I have ever seen. You can't go to a Chicago bar now without seeing huge Fat Tire signs. They only serve it in 22oz bottles though.

Unfortunately "proper" British cider is perceived to be too much of an acquired (and very very alcoholic) taste for the US market.
It's a sad measure of the state of the mass-manufactured US beer market when Sam Adams is perceived to be a half decent US beer - I guess it is but only by US standards!! It's a pity that the beer manufacturers don't listen to the consumer a little more.
Incidentally - can anyone from the west side of the Atlantic tell me if there is any way for them to get hold of large quantities of Nova Scotian beer Alexander Keith's IPA? I would literally pay an enormous sum of money to have some shipped to the UK...
