I enjoy beer enough to decide to try to get into home (dorm) brewing--I've got my first batch of beer fermenting right now, and in a few weeks we'll know if it's any good. I went with a double IPA for my first batch because I love the style, but I'm a little worried about doing a high-gravity for my first batch.

Also, for any more experienced brewers out there, how do I deal with airlock overflow/fouling? My fermentation's a little aggressive right now.

Use a bigger primary fermenter like a 6 and a half gallon carboy for a 5 gallon batch. Alternatively, get a piece of rubber tubing that fits in the mouth of your carboy and run it off to a bucket with enough water to submerge the end of the tube.

I would, but the last time I sent a beer sampler to NV it was destroyed by UPS. Just one of the hazards you run into sending alcohol across certain state borders. I'm unsure as to whether is was a MA or NV problem, or just UPS in general.

The problem was you sucking at packaging fragile items, but thanks for thinking of me.

Good news though. I might be getting some from my brother-in-law. Him, my sister, and their two kids are flying in from DC for Christmas, and he said he'd find a way to pack a few.

I have some in my fridge right now. It's hoppy as hell, but noticeably different from an IPA. Pretty intense.

I'm in IL, dunno about the regulations, but if it IS possible I'd love to trade for some Fat Tire which is always recommended in this thread but I can't find anywhere around here.

O boy just got an e-mail for the next extreme beer fest in February by Beer Advocate. So tempted even though pretty much only Maine is farther away from me in the contiguous US. If anyone lives in Boston and can attend it, I would strongly recommend going. You'll get trashed, there are some beers that'll just blow you away, and it's not terribly expensive ($40).

Those are worth attending? I had seen the flyers for the octoberfest and belgian beerfest outside The Lower Depths, but had been disuaded by the 40$ pricetag and the fact most of my friends are too stubborn to drink good beer.

The other day i picked up a 6 of dogfish head's Raison d'etre despite rather crummy review i had seen online and was quite pleased. It was more malty than i expected, and the fruit taste seemed well ballanced with the other flavors (fruit taste being overpowering seemed to be the complaint of most of the reviews). However, you absolutely must drink it in a wide mouth glass, i tried putting it in a more tall narrow glass and it tasted totally different and the head was much more fizzy. (lord knows why)

Ok, so I personally couldn't stand the dogfish "odd" brews, so your mileage may vary when it comes to my beer fest recommendations. But I went to two of them when I was back in school, and they were basically plain awesomeness. $30-$40 is a lot (the ones I did were $30), but you basically get to drink as much beer as you like for 3 hours. And not on shitty beer, or one good beer, but a whole slew of different, interesting and tasty beers. I'm now living in San Diego, but am seriously considering planning a visit to my friends in Boston that coincides with the fest.

This thread is like one giant cocktease, because I have the misfortune to live in a country which boasts some of the worst domestic beer in the world (South Korea, if anyone cares). Pretty much every brew here tastes and looks exactly like Miller Lite - you can get the usual suspects here as far as imports go, but they're enormously overpriced. I don't really fancy paying $9 for a Guinness or $7 for a Heineken.

Japan, though, has some tasty stuff. Asahi Super Dry and Kirin Ichiban are two of my favorites.

Anyone else manage to snag one of these? (I've bought two so far.)

Ooohhhhh... I think I had a package of that last winter, but I don't think I've ever had the Cream Stout. I'll be on the lookout for that after I finish the beer that's taking up entirely too much room in my fridge.

My roomie came back with one from costco. I was very pleased. I was actually at a dinner with my parents at Fire and Ice in Harvard Square when they were first taste-testing the Winter Ale which was kinda cool. Picked up a free glass out of the deal (plus the meal from the folks ).

I'm definitely excited for winter brews though. It's when everyone gets the go-ahead to put some substance into their brews and I love it. Sierra Nevada Celebration and the Harpoon Winter Warmers are two of my favorites.

I generally dislike the winter brews--it's like someone dumped my entire spice rack into the keg. I'm all for flavorful beer, but I find they generally go over the top. The Sam Adams offering is decent if I'm only going to be having one drink.

The Magic Hat winter beer ("Roxy Rolles") is really good, though.

Edit: I'm very intrigued by that Sam Adams sampler, though. The Cream Stout is quality, and a few of the other ones look very enticing. Especially Holiday Porter, I haven't seen that one before. Thanks for the heads up.
