Good choice on the Celebration over the Sam. Did anyone manage to pick up any Sierra Anniversary ale while it was out? Better than Summerfest making it my new favorite from them. Hopefully they'll continue to release it every year (this year was the first).

Heartily agree. My parents were on a raft trip with the owner of Sierra Nevada and I guess he brought some of the Anniversary ale along with him (27th anniversary too, kinda strange). Needless to say they brought a case when I saw them the following week. Also, if you're a Sierra Nevada fan, and you live in Nor Cal. Keep your eyes open for Pale Bock in the late spring. It's basically fantastic, and seasonal/local only.

Sierra Nevada really turns out consistently excellent product. Their Pale Ale is pretty much the standard for APAs. I haven't had the Celebration, but I'm looking forward to getting some. The Summerfest was very good but not great (I'm just not a big fan of pilseners), but the Anniversary was excellent, with some citrus bite that contrasted well with the hops. Their Bigfoot Barleywine is amazing but you have to know what you're getting into: it's tremendously strong, especially if you let it warm to 50 degrees or so.

You know Sierra Nevada is the "real" version of the Sam Adams story. They are both two microbrews that have become very successful (in the scope of microbrews in general). Yet Sierra to me has remained much closer to small micros than Sam has. I've always thought of Sam as being a macro with hints of micro. Everything they do (with the exception of the crazies like Utopias) leaves me saying "yeah, that's a good primer for x-style, but it's pretty weak when compared with x-micro." I don't know - it's hard to explain I guess. I do know that's it's further annoying to me because of all the hype around Sam being a real micro and ol Jimmy Koch handpicking every hop for every beer they make superbowl commercial nonsense.

Sam Adams is the only mass market, American beer that doesn't suck.

Umm what? Sierra Nevada, Fat Tire, Anchor Steam, Redhook....

These guys might have _used_ to be microbrews, but they aren't any longer. Craft brew is really the only distinction these days between the big three and decent tasting beers.

And if you do like Sierra Nevada over Sam Adams (and honestly, choosing an entire company as being better than any other company when it comes to beer is stupid), it's most likely because Sierra Nevada brews a lot less beer than Sam Adams (I'd be shocked if this wasn't true, but have no proof that it is). I know Sierra Nevada had to switch to a pop-top cap recently because the twist-offs let in too much oxygen. Distance from brewery is a big one too. Beer tends to taste a lot better fresh than after a week of shipping in some delivery truck.

I was placing a difference (and label) on those beers according to availability, thinking Samuel Adams is much easier to find than the ones you've mentioned. Walk into any convenience store in the Texas Panhandle, and I can promise you you'll never walk out with a 6-pack of Sierra Nevada. And you'd be damn lucky to find a bottle of Redhook in any liquor store where I live.

I know this isn't technically a beer, but I feel this thread is appropriate for it.

Any suggestions for locating a sam adam's winter classics sampler? I stopped by my local BevMo and it seems to be out of stock for most of their stores (online too).

I consoled myself by picking up 6-packs of Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale and New Belgium's 1554 (an excellent dark ale).

Odd. I actually took a tour of the Redhook brewery two weekends ago and learned that Anheuser Bush actually owns a third of Redhook and because of this, the Redhook beers are tied to the Budweiser distribution network. This is apparently (if you believe my tour guide) the largest distribution network in the world, surpassing even coca cola.

I've never really spent time in the center of the country, or in the south, but I do know it's pretty easy to find Sierra Nevada in Boston and NYC. Same with Redhook. I might think it's more to do with the actual beers themselves, as a Sam Adams is still a lager, and not particularly strong, while Sierra Nevada doesn't really make any beer without a signature taste. Redhook's ESB is pretty mild though, so I can't explain that.

The fact is I can buy Sam Adams anywhere in the country(just like budweiser), but when I'm driving through central ohio or michigan, they don't have Sierra Nevada. I'm sure theres anecdotal evidence supporting both sides of this case, but Sierra Nevada is a much, much smaller company than Samuel Adams is in terms of volume and revenue. Boston and NYC are major, major beer consumption and distribution centers, so it's natural that after expanding in the west, SN ports their product over to North-East Corridor (Philly/NYC/Hartford/Prov/Boston) for easy profits. I'm not saying it's not availible in the South (I've drank some in a VA commuter city), but it's not as common as SA is in the south (Which I found without trouble in a small alabama town, but no SN)

Though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours, and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable; I simply am not there.

It isn't that you can't get Sierra Nevada in as wide an area as Sam Adams - I can guarantee you can get Sierra Nevada in Michigan.

It's just more difficult; grocery stores will stock Sam Adams; they may or may not stock Sierra Nevada. Kaubel's logic on calling SA a mass market beer makes perfect sense to me.

++ On the Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale recommendation. It's awesome. Last year I had a six-pack and went back the next day to buy a case of the stuff. Fantastic.

Beverage industry magazine serving the entire beverage marketplace

If you look down at craft beers, you'll notice that Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale sells more than Sam Adams Boston Lager.

Now, while the Boston Brewing Company has a much larger overall production, I think it's hard to argue that somehow Boston Lager is a mass market beer while Sierra Nevada is not, anecdotal evidence as to where you can find what beer to the contrary. Especially since both dwarf in comparison to the big 3 (90% of domestic beer sales - the next 47 companies account for 8% ). Of the top 50 breweries, Sam Adams ranks 8th and Sierra Nevada 10th. They're really not that different in terms of production, especially when viewed relative to the industry as a whole.

I was just at the grocery store and they had a shelf sign for the Sam Adams winter classics, but when I picked up the beer it was actually the brew master set, not the winter classics. Much gnashing of teeth ensued and I put it back on the shelf.

More anecdotal evidence: I can find Sierra Nevada in Springfield, MO, but not at every grocery store in town like I can Sam Adams. It doesn't get much more "middle of America" than here and Sam Adams Boston Lager is available pretty much anywhere Bud Lite bottles are available. Any grocery store in the area will have the Boston Lager and probably the Brown Ale and Hefeweizen as well.
