This thursday I had the pleasure of trying a Röklakritsporter, that would translate to Smoke Licorice Porter and tasted pretty much as it sounds, a porter with smoked malt and licorice thrown in during brewing. This is the kind of flavoured beer that you won't describe with words like "and a touch of licorice". This thing taste alot of licorice and salmiak. Really alot.
All in all a interesting brew, worth to try out if you ever find yourself in a pub that have it.

I have to agree. The other stuff by Southern Tier is fine, not great, but generally pretty good. But the Ubersun, an Imperial Wheat Ale, is very good. I may have to sample their newer lines.

Have you had the BBC Cabin Fever seasonal? I remember it being particularly good, and my friend swears by it. The Coffeehouse Porter is also a favorite.

Hope you liked it. New Belgium beers FINALLY started getting distributed in downstate IL in the last week or so, so I've been stocking up at the grocery store. Immediately got a case of Fat Tire, good as always, and I also tried the Mothership Wit and was really impressed. It's the only American-made wheat beer I've tried so far that comes close to (or is as good as) Hoegaarden.
Unfortunately, it's a little too hot for 1554, but I'll get around to that eventually.

Brew your own, for a set up cost of <$50 you can make beer at a cost of less than $0.50 a litre. You may trash a batch or two in the learning, but it can be a good outcome.

I'm going to be in Chicago for a week on business, and I always make it a point to try local microbrews and establishments that do them justice. Any recommendations? For reference, I'll be staying a few blocks from the intersection of 290 with 90/94, downtown.

Of course, you could try the Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA, if you dare, for a real man's IPA.

You know, I tried the Double Crooked Tree, and while it was good, I thought Hopslam was overall better.
On the other hand, it was good enough to convince me to try Dark Horse's Black Bier Special Reserve, which is *excellent*. It's basically a stout that doesn't sit anywhere near as heavily - same chocolate/coffee sorts of flavors, but a lot lighter overall.

I don't know about exact locations, but the obvious Chicago brewery that springs to mind is Goose Island. They have a bunch of different styles of beer, most of which are pretty tasty.

The other possible add is Tia Maria. 1-2 shots added gives a luscious chocolate flavour. Known as a "Chocolate Spider" locally (Bradford, UK) although its also know as Dublin Milk Shake or Black Maria.

I just now looked this up on the web and they claim you pour 1 or 2 shots and drink it quickly like a car bomb or some variant of that, however, this is incorrect to the way i was shown and enjoy. Try it, it adds a slight kick to the Guinness and tastes great.

This is exactly what my early 20's were spent doing, as well. I'm not normally a fan of Vodka, but I've found that adding it (especially Vanilla Stoli!) to Guiness is just amazing. It tastes fantastic, and really packs a hell of a kick. Have to be careful, as you don't realize just how powerful it is until too late!

I recently had some Wild Blue, a blueberry lager. I thought it was from Blue Dawg Brewery as the label indicated, but apparently I misread the label and it's an AB product. Somehow that doesn't seem shocking--it was atrocious. If you want some Sam Adams Cherry Wheat that tastes like blueberry instead of cherry, this could be just the beer for you. If you want something drinkable, stay far away.

I would like to second this mention. I've tried both the triple and the white and they are both superb. I'm even starting to find it on tap in several places in south bay, Los Angeles.

I'm also going to ++ this.
I've had the Dubbel and the Tripel. I have a Four, Curieaux and a Black in the fridge as we speak. I can't wait to crack each of them open.
I'm glad Ommegang isn't the only game in town for Trappist-style ales.

Has anyone ever had Switchback? Its an American Pale ale brewed in Burlington, Edit: VT (Must have been drinking a little too much while posting this). It is unfiltered and I had some when I went to visit some friends at UVM this past winter. If anyone does any traveling in the Northeast, make it a point to stop by the brewery or cut into a local bar to have a pint. You won't be dissapointed.
