Who says it won't help though? Couldn't they just design the encounter around eliminating pieces, and after say, X turns, the enemy pieces would just attack your group outright?

Perhaps it's just one side set up, and you get a stage encounter like Archaedas. 10 Pawns zerg first, then each of the pairs combined and finally a King and Queen encounter.
Or even better, a movement encounter like Heigan. Bit of DPS on the boss (could be the King or Queen piece) and then avoiding the pawns and other pieces thwomping on you. You can evade it by knowing and seeing how the pieces (would) move, although that seems like a bitch to code and if the fight really doesn't require you to know chess mechanics then it's prolly not happening :) Ahh, boss designs, I can dream on forever...
Anyway, saw the video (saw a quicker runthrough by the Noggaholic guys last week as well) and it does look awesome. Plenty of nooks and crannies for bonus loot and I could see a lot of places where a boss fight would take place. And the last bossfight seems wicked, big platform on top of the tower kind of resemblant to Nefarian's room with the balcony.
