I had heard about this a while ago and was just digging through my video archive and saw a few videos of it. I understand the basic gist is 5 man groups run around and fight other 5 man group in world PvP, but does anyone have a clearer rule set? Anyone actually participated in a 5v5 Roaming PvP event? Seems like it would be hard to get people to co-operate and follow the 5 man rule among other things.
We've had these events on our server. To my surprise, there were very few assholes jumping around in the arena, and the atmosphere was nice. The rules were simple, stay in the arena and kill the opposing team. The usage of consumables was restricted to healing pots and normal party buffs if I remember correctly.
We've had these a few times in the STV Arena. Never managed to pull off a roaming, because the alliance guilds on our server are too narcisistic to not fight in front of 200 people. When we'd announce it a couple weeks ahead, we'd generally get crazy many people showing up, and when fighting in the arena, you'd generally get some heavy FPS lag if you looked up to the stands. As for rules, realize that no matter what rules you choose, some people will be unhappy. Don't change your rules everytime someone complains. Pick a set of rules you like and go with it. In the end, we went with a stricter version of the coming BC arena rules, by not allowing healthstones to non-Warlocks either. (And of course, no other consumables, no engineering whatsoever, no cooldowns above 10 min, no non-group buffs).
So 5v5 nights in arena are simple enough, but I still don't quite understand the rules of "Roaming PvP." Are you just assigned an area to ride around in looking for an unengaged 5-Man to attack? Or is there a stricter format where perhaps you are assigned a team to seek out and the fight occurs wherever you find them?
Ret are basically the fathers of this idea as far as I know, and I'm sure they don't mind you asking some specifics. Gauss and Rovell come here occasionally but I think you'll have better luck (as in faster) if you ask on their boards :)
I'll dig around and see if I can find the rules post from 5v5 night #4. Also, if you're interested in some awesome pvp vids, check out Rovell's entire 5v5 night series, it's all very well done.
edit: Found it
Rules of Engagement
Group Makeup
- Limit on no more than TWO (2) of a class in the group. So for example, no group can field 3 warriors or 3 mages, it's 2 max.
Allowed
- Bandages
- Healthstones only if a Warlock is in group.
- Resurrections [Including Casted Resurection, Combat Rez, Shaman Self-Rez, Soulstone if associated classes are in groups.]
- Thistle Tea
Disallowed
- No Assjams [If two groups are fighting, keep roaming till you find another fight]
- No Consumables/Potions [alchemy, tubers, flasks, zanza, NDS, etc of any kind]
- No Engineering
- No hitting groups that are UNMOUNTED, they are OFFLIMITS until they mount.
- No outside buffs of any kind [dragonslayer buff, etc]
Spectator Rules
- Must be SITTING down, not mounted while observing a fight.
- Must be NAKED + Wearing a WHITE HANBOCK [Can buy these in Moonglade] OR Any WHITE LOOKING ROBE. The idea is to be easily recognizable.
This will help avoid the confusion of not knowing who is who.
Those are the official rules from the last 5v5 night that was being organized. Just pulled it off a quick search of our general boards.
Cool stuff. I'm sure with the sitting in white rule though there would be lots of rogues roaming looking for easy HKS. Sucks when people have to be childish and ruin cool events like this.
Now, how on earth do you get people to follow these rules? Was interested in one of these way back when, but the idea of "rules" pretty much got shit on and laughed out.
No way to enforce rules against a team loaded down with flasks, mind control caps, and rocket helms if they so chose.
Well, there's like 10 teams from each faction. If 1 team decided to try griefing, they're gonna get steamrolled by the full 10 opoosite faction teams, while all their faction guys sit and watch. It generally wasn't too much of a problem though. At most you'd have a few random people trying to gank, nothing too serious.

We've had two events with about 150 and 300 people watching/fighting respectively, and in total about 4 people gave us a bit of trouble. All the guys who bitched about the rules on forums ended up fighting under the rules we set. It's surprisingly a non-issue.

Kilrogg horde use flasks for pvp?
I'm originally from Dunemaul (edit: and that is where we tried to get a 5v5 night going). To put it mildly, there is a world of difference between the two servers in how they approach the subject of PVP.
