With all the TBC/Hunter threads, I thought it would be interesting to post on a different topic, online gaming in general.

http://www.aeropause.com/archives/20...most_ann_1.php

10. Typing – I notice that more and more people are buying headsets now for playing online PC games, but for the love of god we need to get rid of typing in PC games. It takes the immersion level down when you have to stop to type something. It also usually ends up with me getting a slug in the brain while I am busy relating something. Please PC game makers, take out typing and force everyone to buy USB headsets.

9. Kids – For the love of god will someone call little Timmy’s parents and tell them he has the mouth of a trucker. There are a lot of mature kids playing online, but about 30% of them are the most annoying, horrible, and inconceivable teammates you’d ever want to play with.

8. Weapon Whores – Some people out there just can’t play a game without getting their favorite piece of death and destruction. The best example of this is the sniper in Halo 2. I am really good with the sniper, but so far I have been betrayed about 300 times because I was first in line to get it and the moron behind me thinks he is better with it so he lovingly tosses a grenade at my feet. You can’t always get what you want!

7. Spawn Campers – Ohh I long for the day when I can exact my revenge on those
who think it’s funny to camp at my spawn and kill me as I materialize. It is the reason that I stopped playing GRAW so much. The game turned from fun tactical shooter into a race for the other teams spawn point. Can’t the developers put up some kind of invisible wall around spawn points, at least give us a chance to live before Timmy blows our grey matter cross the beautifully rendered ground.

6. Noobs – There are 2 breeds of noobs out there. The first are people new to the game that will listen and work with you in order to make themselves better at the game. Then there are the noobs who can’t seem to take constructive criticism as anything else but an insult towards their mom’s pureness. These noobs curse and scream at you when all you wanted to do was to let them know something useful. They think if the cuss enough they won’t look quite as noobish, but I think we all know better.

5. Corpse Humping (aka Teabagging) – Oh it’s all fun when you are doing it to someone else, but the second someone drops their wrinkly coin purse down upon your face it just not funny anymore. You spend the rest of the round trying to return the favor and usually end up losing the game.

4. Racism & Homophobia – Why must every 13 to 18 year old boy in this country use the word fag and nig%& like it’s going out of style? Just once I would like to get through a game without some moronic 15 year old spewing every racist and homophobic word out of his underdeveloped mouth. I am all for letting off steam while playing but a bunch of white kids screaming nig$#@ is just plain stupidity.

3. Lag – I know that lag will most likely be around for as long as gaming exists, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not annoying as hell. The thing about lag though is that it seems to show its ugly head at the wrong time. How many times have you been getting ready to make a kill and all of a sudden your prey is on the other side of the room walking face first into the wall? We must shut down the web and make the internet a gaming only zone, who’s with me!

2. Cheaters – This one should be obvious. No one likes these people so they feel the need to get online every night and throw the balance of a game off. What kind of person is so desperate for attention that they have to get it in a negative manner? I don’t understand how playing a game with an overwhelming advantage is fun. Seems to me that it would take all the fun out of the game.

1. A-Holes – Yeah that’s right my number one is all the glorious people who wake up everyday not realizing that they are big a-holes. They don’t mind cheating or talking to loud into their mic, because they don’t care. Online games allow them the anonymity they desire to perpetuate their a-holeness. Each one of them is the cause for most of this list. I know there is no way to get rid of these people online but just getting to rant about it eases my mind a bit.
The only one on this list that is not directly applied to WoW is Weapon Whores, since the only respawning items you can get in game are the AB/WSG buffs, but I imgine there are people that take the buffs just because they can. Also notice that 8 of the 10 on the list deal with people.

Millions of words are written annually purporting to tell how to beat the races, whereas the best possible advice on the subject is found in the three monosyllables: 'Do not try.'

Im famous on my server for 5. Im a druid, bearhumping is in the class description. I used to publish screen compliations of the most "famous" on the server getting served a little slice of bear on corpse love. Far from being offended, people whisper me wanting my "services". Most just lie down in front of me. After almost two years, its still funny.

In raids my guild has a rule to rez me last on a wipe, and the warriors will often pay me off to go hump one of the other warriors.

I take pride in my skills.

My one biggest problem with WoW is general incompetence. A very high percentage of the people that play this game are absolutely clueless when it comes to pretty much anything. A distant second is the time required to play the game at a reasonably high level. Ironically enough, both of those are true for virtually everything. :P

Most of that top 10 list dealt with annoying people, and those can be muted, ignored or avoided in general.

Personally, I almost universally prefer typing to voice comms. Part of my dislike for Vent comes from the uncanny resemblance to placing orders at a drive-through for hours on end, so maybe my feelings would be different if everyone had great, high-quality microphone setups and knew how to use them.

Even without the huge volume swings, static, feedback, and popping, though, I'm not sure I'd really take to it. I'm not a crowd kind of person, and being in a 40-person Vent channel is like always being in a crowd.

Also, I'm no role-player, but there is a mental level of immersion in the game world that I tend to maintain, and Vent makes it impossible to separate the avatar from the player.

I know Vent is invaluable, and sometimes it's even fun, but I just can't get behind wanting it to replace text chat entirely, especially in MMOs.

I had to tell my raid leader last week that BOTH hands receive the DW miss penalty. I also failed at convincing a fellow dps warrior(tank, I would have understood) that AP has no affect on execute.

I hope neither of them browse these forums :ninja:

We have a hunter who has an rogue alt as well who believes this as well. However incompetence and idiocy definitely take a backseat to the egoism I encounter every time I log on.

I believe it was started by weapon enchant choice discussion, and the difference between proc rates on the MH and OH due to instant attacks. It's a very pervasve myth.

This was also such a staple in my original guild, that the women all thought they should participate and call it "clam-dipping." That lead to paladins putting DI on women just to get clam-dipped.

If this doesn't add to your thread Bariss, let me know and I can edit it out. But Raph Koster posted his laments about online gaming about nine months ago and I thought it was a good read:

What are the lessons of MMORPGs today?

Lone heroes can’t slay dragons. It takes an army.

People are only good at one thing.

That’s why it takes six people (all doing different jobs) to kill most anything.

You never, ever, ever change jobs. If you want to, you probably need to die.

You can be the best in the world at your job.

But so can everyone else.

And you will all do it exactly the same way.

Intelligent beings who have civilizations and languages of their own are generally evil and should be slain.

Many, if not all, wild creatures are highly aggressive and will attack on sight.

Evil is not redeemable; good is not a choice. Your morals are innate.

Killing is the only real way to gain people’s admiration.

Well, you can make stuff too, but you won’t earn the same kind of admiration.

In fact, there are only two kinds of admiration in the world, and they can be quantified.

Having a hobby will probably reduce your admiration.

All that hoorah about endangered species is like, a total exaggeration. There’s plenty of everything.

You not only can’t go home again, you probably don’t have one.

If you do, it’s mostly to store stuff, not to live in.

You never have people over.

Telepathy is normal.

Staring at someone who is talking the politest thing you can do. Because the only other option is to not look at them at all.

Running past or away from people while you are talking to them is also polite.

If you don’t keep up with the Joneses, you will never see them again. In fact, if you don’t keep up with your friends, you will never see them again either.

There are no children.

Death doesn’t really sting. Nerf, however, is incredibly painful.

There is always a demand for couriers and assassins.

Moving frequently is normal, and never going back to your old stomping grounds again is the way of things.

There are no such things as social progress or technological advancement.

In fact, evil will always be lurking at the edge of the village.

On the other hand, it will never invade.

There are no governments. Thus there are no laws. Instead, there are laws of physics.

There are gods, and they are capricious, and have way way more than ten commandments. Nobody knows how many because everyone clicked past them.

Sports are stupid, because everyone’s body is the same.

Charity is not a virtue; in fact, it’s frequently physically impossible.

You should not associate with those of lower social standing than yourself.

You can’t be in two places at once. But places can be in two places at once.

Parallel universes are obvious.

Walking is stupid.

Actually, in general, taking your time is counterproductive.

The most important thing in the world is slaying something that will be back the next day… before anyone else gets to slay it.

You should probably have entrance and résumé requirements to join your circle of friends.

Hunting is the noblest profession.

I take that back; hunting is only noble until you’re good enough to switch to murder.

Robbing the dead of indigenous cultures is how you make money.

There is no such thing as obesity.

All women are beautiful and all men are either handsome or darkly mysterious.

Somehow, this means that nobody is beautiful and there is no mystery.

There is no need for bras.

People have sex a lot.

People never touch.

Nobody reads.

They’ve never heard a brand new song.

In fact, inventing is either forbidden or impossible. Sometimes both.

Most people don’t have families.

If they do, they probably don’t have mothers and fathers, only brothers and sisters.

Nobody’s really from here, they just live here.

The tide never washes in and out.

The birds never migrate.

Strawberries are never in season.

Night’s really short.

Nothing sleeps.

Nothing dreams.

There is art and beauty in the world, but you can’t be responsible for any of it.

There is no death; there is simply a failure to show up.

Because of this, there is also rarely any mourning.

Ignie Ferroque translates from latin to "with fire & with sword." It is a stock phrase used to describe the results of a destructive raid into an enemy's territory, whose sole purpose is to generate fear, terror, and destruction.

You see, my issue there is that it's just really a thinly painted diatribe from Ralph Koster against *games*. He designs and builds sandbox worlds, that's cool, but much like Brad Defruiter, he needs to realise that there are people out there who actively *like* games not worlds, and don't like their view on things.

Why on earth would I play an online game to invent a new song?

The hunters in my previous guild concluded that 4 attack power is a bigger upgrade than 1 crit.

The kind of incompetence you can find at the raid level is simply appalling.

The "funniest said thing to x class" and saying how people raid but don't know basic principals of the game is interesting for me to read.

The top 10 list I choose wasn't the best choice for this board, but maybe people can think of top 10 lists that are directly about WoW? Like top 10 raid wipe causes or top 10 favorite TBC changes.

lol - that's not a peculiarity of online gaming (but i guess none of those points really are, save a few), but definitely something that's irked me for quite some time. as someone who actually has a joint degree in philosophy and religion, it amuses (and frustrates) me to no end to hear armchair philosophers expound upon their various theories of morality. the ability to type semi-coherently is apparently carte blanche for making claims as to the nature of life, the universe, and everything. i'm not so deluded to think my particular field of study is one that requires terribly specialized knowledge to even think about, but give me a break.

This applies to politics as well.

I'm sure Gurg and some EJ members can pretty annoyed when people make assertions about legal matters, too.
